A wicked smile crossed your face as a thought occurred to you. Why not catch the beasts at their own game? before they even had a chance to summon these, Tree creatures, or whatever it was Soran the wizard was on about?
"order the men to stand down until morning. I have a plan I need to talk to you two about. and bring some of the volunteers, they'll want to hear this."
By day-break the next day, you had finalized the plan, and had already taken up positions along one of the merchant paths to the north east of the forest.
Two men, posing as traders from your kingdom to the next, would travel along the route. With no weapons, or seemingly anyway to defend themselves, they would travel along the path until an 'accident' happened, and a wheel from their cart slipped.
The cart had been filled with stored foods and wines, as at this time of year it would fetch a high price to those seeking to stock up before winter entombs them. Perfect bait for these Goat-men.
And after a few minutes of waiting, they appeared. 1 or 2 at first, sneaking, as best they could, along the brush to either side of the path. Once they had seen that the two where just an old man and a stocky young boy, the rest appeared. 45 goat devils, all walking on cloven hooves, carried an assortment of stolen knives, clubs and spears.
At the back of the group, a single female stood a little taller than the others, with snow white fur covering her thighs, and large human breasts contained behind a tight strip of cloth. Twin reindeer like horns protruded from her fore-head, only amplifying her unnatural beauty. she carried a carved staff, with many different runes and curses worked into the wood and bone. And covering her face was a cloth veil, with the image of an eye worked into it in blood.
She growled orders at the others, who responded by pointing their arms at the two, and creeping ever closer. One of the two who had arrived first, even dared to poke in the cart, to see what spoils they would be taking back.
