Stacey’s video surveillance gets an upgrade

Stacey had just come downstairs. She wasn’t sure why, she wasn’t particularly hungry and definitely didn’t feel like getting some lunch this Saturday afternoon. Even though she already had skipped on her breakfast. But she also didn’t want to lock herself up in her room forever until she had to move into the zoo.

The moment she opened the door to the living room she immediately saw her little sister sitting on the couch with whom she made instant eye contact. Her sister remained silent for a few seconds, and Stacey could see that she was checking out her body.

“I’m sorry sis”, Stacey’s sister said clearly remorseful, “I was just trying to have some fun …”

“It’s alright, “ Stacey said somewhat elated that her sister offered an apology. The situation sucked, but knowing that the outcome had not been what her sister had been after made her feel a little better. Still, she was still naked in front of her family members and whoever was watching the camera’s.

As Stacey walked into the living room she noticed that her father was sitting on the other couch opposite to her sister reading his newspaper.

“Hi Stacey”, he said as he glanced over his newspaper trying not to gawk at her naked body.

But everything wasn’t normal, Stacey realized. At that point she heard someone running down the stairs and saw her little brother running past her only a few seconds later.

“Dad, I’m done! I did the camera stuff you asked me!”, he said. Clearly he was very excited.

“That’s great son!”, her father said. “You look like crap, though. Did you even sleep last night?”

“No, not really. You owe me a tray of energy drink", her brother grinned.

“Alright. So show me what you’ve made, son”, her father said.

Stacey hadn’t been sure of what to do downstairs, but now she decided to simply stay at her spot and listen to the conversation her father and brother were having.

It was clear that as part of his excitement he forgot the priorities and knowledge of his audience. “Well, when you now open the app and go to the live feed, you can see the living room here on this screen where it always has been.” he said while showing his phone to her father. “In the past, when it was turned on, it would be recording everybody, both video and audio. I’ve now trained it on Stacey’s face and body posture. If the system isn’t sure if it is Stacey or not, it simply checks the amount of skin showing. If the person is naked, it’s Stacey, if they’re mostly clothed, it isn’t Stacey”

Her brother looked at her father as if it was the greatest achievement ever, although to Stacey it sounded like a pretty simple thing, at least in theory. Also her father looked pretty much unfazed.

“So?”, he asked.

“Well, if you look here at the camera in the living room, “ her brother continued, “it has turned on automatically because it detected that Stacey is downstairs. So you don’t need to turn it on manually anymore. But that’s not all! It has also automatically blurred us. Whoever is watching this video will only see her, I picked some parameters for blurring that will make it impossible to recognize any of us.”

“That’s great!”, her father said, “but will they be able to overhear us?”

“No”, her brother said smiling, “it will mute all audio that is produced by someone other than Stacey! You can talk all you want, and it won’t record a thing. Unless it’s Stacey talking, of course. Then it will try to filter out all the background noise so it’s easier to understand what Stacey is saying”

Stacey just stood there in the living room. As with dinner, they were talking as if she wasn’t there. But also, they were talking about her as if her privacy was not important anymore. As if her naked body could be broadcast to whomever had access to those damn cameras whereas the rest of her family would not be recorded at all. She felt like she couldn’t possibly agree with this, but couldn’t find any rational argument against this. Wasn’t this what she was going for? Standing naked in her family’s living room while being videoed had definitely not been her intention up-front when she asked Bridget about moving into the zoo. But the changes had been so smooth and gradual that she couldn’t identify any one step where things had gone awry. She simply continued standing in the middle of the living room. Not sure what to do or say.

“But there’s more”, her brother continued, “when you start a sentence with ‘Stacey’ in a commanding tone, then the system will record what you’re saying at that moment. It doesn’t work flawlessly yet and I’m still fine tuning some parameters for that. In fact my GPU is training the new model as we speak”

“English, son. English”

“Right. What I meant to say is, it’s a work in progress”, her brother said.

“I think you did an outstanding job, son”, her father said.

Stacey could see her brother was very proud of his work and the compliment he received. She also felt a little proud. Of course it was still her little brother who was growing up and doing some really technical stuff. On other days she might have also complimented him, but given how she was the victim of his work she kept her mouth shut.

“Can I see it as well?!”, her sister said.

“Sure!”, her brother said. At that point her brother picked up the remote of the TV and turned it on. The screen remained black for a few seconds, and then it showed the app that Stacey had seen previously on the TV as well.

Stacey couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Basically the couches were partially blurred and you couldn’t really recognize anyone sitting on them. However, she was very clearly visible. She could see some of the little hairs on her arms, a few very short hairs around her areolas that were also visible for all to see in their full glory. “Well, I’m going to catch some sleep, Dad. Hope you like it”, her brother said. He stood up and walked past Stacey, headed for the stairs.

As Stacey heard her brother walk up the stairs she decided to also go back to her bed room.
