Lauren's confused

Lauren was rather confused as the customer's only reacted by turning to each other in clear confusion. Lauren felt a little nervous. What were they reacting to? It seemed to be her... but why?

"Do you think it's take your kid to work day?" A man asked the woman next to him.

"It must be." The woman agreed.

"Well that's fun!" A young woman said. She turned back to Lauren with a rather condescending grin.

"Hey buddy!" She said, clearly condescending now. "Are you here to take our order?

"Uh... yes..." Lauren said, uncertain and unpleasantly confused.

"That's so great!" She said with a grin.

She proceeded to order for the table. Unfortunately, she was speaking slowly, as though Lauren were a dumb child. In fact, due to Lauren's outfit, that's exactly what she thought Lauren was. This made Lauren grow annoyed, on the verge of anger. Why were these people talking to her like this?
