Chapter 32 by Mannelig Mannelig

Next, you towel each other off in public...

Oh, you thought so?

You expect to follow the others to some sort a shelf where towels are waiting, and you all rub off each other.

But. No such thing. Ashley picks up the swimsuits and gives them a quick rinse before handing them out to you and Casey. "Here you go..." You take it from her with a questioning look, but slip back into it, still wet as a drenched cat.

Seeing all this for the first time and going through the motions with Ash and Casey, you made another mistake, in not going through all the new memories that involve being in your particular dorm. There is just so many of them that you had just shut them all out, and it's just now that you realize the magnitude of your change.

You have transformed the entire dorm.

Well, obviously, right? Instead of what was previously the dorm, in its place is now a big roofed swimming pool. But there is still a dorm here. That is, the Patty-Kempner Dorm, named after some 1960s athlete. The concept of a pool+dormitory is a new and unique innovation, and Kempner was just finished in recent years. The front side of the building houses the wardrobes of the students, a dorm library and some study areas overlooking the pool, as well as the exit towards the campus. The back side where you are now, houses the students and the dining areas. And for students to move between the two sides, they have to swim through the central pool, as part of the training to keep everyone fit.

You shake your head about how impractical this must be for everyone to get around, but your 'memories' provide you more details now that you begin to think about it. Like, there are two big emergency doors in the back, and there are staff entries and dry-lifts so that maintenance, laundry, breakfast and dinner can be organized. But as students, you're not supposed to regularly use other points of entry than the pool.

Still wet from training, you follow Casey and Ashley down the slip-proof staircase, which also doubles as a constant giant blow-dryer. The warm air streams are quite strong, but you still feel a bit moist when you arrive in the dining area. The freshmen are housed in the lowest basement floor, the -500 level, which is divided into three sections that each hold twelve rooms for three people each. Above that are the floors for the other years of this four-year college, and -100 holds community areas and the dining rooms.

And yes, that means it's basically all underground, although the -100 level has rooflights opening up into the park behind the dorm. It also means that the dorm population of Kempner is only roughly half the size of the original dorm you somehow wished away from existence.

Almost everyone from your whole training squad of 22 freshmen trickles into the breakfast-and-dining hall now. Formally, it's room PKD-120, but a big sign announces it as Goodell Hall. Aside from that, the room looks almost indistinguishable from the old dorm layout. You even recognize the two men from the kitchen staff who hand out the hot meals and occasionally refill the buffet.

However, the walls (that previously showed some fainted decoration from the '90s) are now covered mostly with a vivid seafood mural. And... also... you groan. The seating areas are marked much more distinctly than before, hinting at who gets to eat at which tables.

Ash and Cas help themselves to plates with chicken risotto and a burger. You'd like to just have the same menu, but just trying to lick your lips reminds you that you're on liquid food now. Okay, that is entirely different now. You hunt around and get an OJ-smoothie, a glass of buttermilk and a small bowl of icecream. There's also mashed potatos and gravy. You take a heap of that and trudge over to the grouping of green tables, overseen by the green frog mural of you froshes.

The adjacent grouping of blue-grey tables has a dolphin looking over them, beyond that is a black-and-white killer whale mural in the junior corner and finally there is a red-orange table grouping with hints of an eldritch octopus lurking in the corresponding corner of the room.

So this is the new dorm. But...
