A Special Car

Sam was curious as her mother drove, she wanted to go straight to the hotel but her mother said they couldn't take the car. She didn't want anyone to see it, as that would raise questions. Pamela said she had another car they could take. Sam thought it was odd, as she knew her mother had three more cars but everyone knew about those too. So Sam just sat quietly as her mother drove.

Sam was puzzled as they pulled into a storage place. It was pretty isolated place, as they entered. Pamela drove to a big corner storage unit. She got out and went to the door. She pulled a key and unlocked the door, quickly raising it. She got back into the car and slowly drove in. Once inside Pamela turned on the light to the unit. Inside was pretty big with only one object inside. It was a car but it was covered in a tarp. Pamela quickly got out of the car and started pulling the tarp off.

Sam gasped as she saw a 1959 Ford Thunderbird convertible. It was midnight black and chrome trim. The front grill was in shape of spiders webs. There was a chromo bat on the front and a chromo headless horseman hood ornament. The hub caps where skull and cross bones. The interior was tiger print. Sam's mouth hang opened as her mother just looked at the car with a warm smile.

"OK, when did you get that ?" Asked Sam, smiling.

"An old friend help me build it when we where in highschool. We promise each other we would take a spin when we graduate. Heck, we would have just left town honestly." Said Pamela, as memories of her and Maddy working on the car in secret came flooding back. She smiled but her eyes told sadness.

This didn't go unnoticed by Sam, who thought this friend was a boyfriend. She was disappointed that her mother didn't married this guy.

"So what happened ?" Asked Sam, Pamela sighed.

"My parents, life." Said Pamela, as hints of angry shown in her eyes. Her parents found out about the car, had paid a lot of money to have taken and destroy. Luckily Maddy was go at hiding stuff. Her parents offered her a million dollars and any sport car she wanted for the location. She refused, almost getting kicked out of the house for it too.

"This was one of the few things I owned that they would never get their hands on." Said Pamela, sighing.

"You hated them ?" Asked Sam, as she didn't knew her grandparents.

"Yes, no. It's complicated. I just want us to have a different type of relationship. When they died I felt relief, I never visit their graves after the funeral." Said Pamela, keeping a emotionless expression.

"I never seen a photo of them." Said Sam, as she didn't even know their names.

"I burn them all, every photo, every picture, every portrait. I sold off almost everything they owned. What few things I couldn't sell, I personally broke and through away and spat on it for good measure." Said Pamela, smiling.

Sam gulped, she knew her mother could get angry but this was something really took her aback. Her mother was usually kind, a bit stuffy but never this cruel.

"I'm surprised you let them have a burial sight. Why just dump the bodies some place." Said Sam, Pamela quickly turned to her. She gulped as Pamela looked angry.

"Sam, their are something you just don't do. I hated them yes but you just don't disrespect someone like that. I will never go see the graves but they at least deserve a resting place." Said Pamela, glaring at Sam.

"I'm sorry, you're right. It's just why did you put up with them. You could have left when you turned eighteen. You and this friend could have just skip town. Made a new life for yourselves." Said Sam, Pamela just sighed.

"It wouldn't be that simple. They would have come after me. They had the money. Plus, Sam I honestly didn't know how to take care of myself. They made sure I was always dependent on them. They would never left me have a job, never left me have an account they didn't know about. What little I could hide from them, would never be enough. Even with..... Help. They would buy any place that would hired me, burn any place I could live away from them." Said Pamela, frowning and clenching her fist.

Sam gave her mother a huge.

"Thanks I needed that. I do love you Sam, I might not always show it. If you want to marry Danny, you two have my blessing. Just wait until after college, I'm to young to be a grandmother." Said Pamela, smiling. Sam smiled at her mother.

"Sure, but what about Da...." Said Sam, but was interrupted by her mother.

"Don't worry about him." Said Pamela, smiling. Sam nodded.

"Good, now put all that stuff into the truck." Said Pamela, she parked her pink car.

After a few minutes both of them where in the black Thunderbird. Pamela took the key out of the glove box. It had an old and faded skeleton key chain on it. A memory of a cute redhead girl who wanted it, at a carnival. Her parents refusing to let her have it. Then an auburn hair girl giving it to her in secret.

Sam noticed a tear forming in her mother's eye.

"Something wrong ?" Asked Sam, Pamela looked at her.

"Yes, so many years gone by without a friend." Said Pamela, as she started the car.
