My day isn’t over

“You should come with me when I report to Captain Zaitsev.” Dadonov tells me.

“Yes, sergeant.” I say. We start to walk together.

“So how did I do?” I ask nervously.

“Well, you’re still here.” He says.

“I only shot my gun twice.” I tell him.

“Did you hit anything?” He asks.

“Yes, a general and an admiral.” I joke. Dadonov chuckles.

“I don’t know.” I say more seriously.

“It’s a start.” He says. “You unloaded that, right?”

“I did.” I tell him.

We approach and properly greet Captain Zaitsev, who is eager to hear our report.

“We cut the wires at the specified time, sir.” Dadonov reports.

“Any difficulties?” Zaitsev asks him.

“We took some small arms fire on the way in, sir.”

“Any casualties?”

“One wounded, sir.”

“Very well. Return to your squad, sergeant. You’re dismissed.” Zaitsev says. He turns to me. “And you, stay with me for a moment.”

Dadonov leaves, and I find myself alone with the Captain.

“So, what did you think of your first mission?” He asks me.

“To be honest, sir, I haven’t really thought much about it yet.” I tell him.

“That’s a good way to handle it.” He says. “You’re supposed to see commissar Fedorov. I’ll have you bring my report to him, then you can get some rest. You look like you need it.”
