The football field was mostly empty for the moment, but all up and down the sidelines, the two opposing football teams were getting ready to go.

On the home side, the Violet River Sharks were preparing for war, and the quarterback Charlie Tower was warming up his arm. The whole team was raring to go, and the anticipation was thick in the air. “Thanks, man. Unfortunately, Charlie doesn’t get hurt too often. Matt’s too good at his job.” Jace nudged his friend, who chuckled.

“Team!” Coach Barker shouted, “It’s time to get started.”

The football team whooped and cheered, and Matt and Ryan grabbed their helmets to get up and go play against the Beavers.

“I think the Sharks are in for a tough fight.” Valerie piped up, “I heard Gabriel Taylor’s a crazy good quarterback.”

“I hope the kid gets taken out quick.” Rachel nodded in agreement, “Let the real star of the team up to the plate.”

Danielle laughed.

“I’d love to see Jace play tonight. He’s improved a lot. If he’d been this good during tryouts at the end of last school year, he’d have made first string for sure.” Dani enthused about her son.

“Especially with Skylar Wayne cheering so hard for him.” Mina laughed.

“Huh?” Valerie asked in confusion.

“Well?” Rachel pressed David. When the boy said nothing, she turned to Mina.

“Spill.” Rachel ordered. Mina shook her head.

“No, I said too much, I shouldn’t have.” Mina insisted, “Val always says I need to stop talking sometimes.”

“This isn’t one of those times, sweetie. What happened today?” Rachel encouraged the girl. Mina drew a finger across her lips and made a twisting motion like a key in a lock, before tossing away the imaginary key.

Rachel’s eyes glinted as she moved down to sit beside Mina.

“Oh, now she’s done it.” Danielle laughed quietly in David’s ear, and Dani leaned her head on David’s shoulder to see better.

“Is that true?” Rachel asked delightedly, and David shook his head.
