Chapter 48

What happens next?

Jane explains that it was just harmless flirting that lead to this

Amid the palpable tension, Jane took a deep breath and looked at John, her eyes filled with a mix of regret and vulnerability. "John, I need you to understand... It's not what it looks like, but I can't deny what happened either."

John's anger was still fresh, his heart heavy with hurt and betrayal. He stared at Jane, waiting for an explanation that might quell the storm of emotions raging within him.

Jane's voice was soft but resolute as she began to explain. "This... this is Mark. We met here in the sauna. He came in after me and there was some harmless flirting. I never intended for it to go this far. We were just talking, having a good time, and... things escalated."

Mark's gaze was downcast, his features etched with a mixture of shame and remorse. "It's true, John. I should have known she was in a relationship. We were both caught up in the moment."

Jane's eyes remained locked on John's as she continued. "We're both responsible for this, John. I should have stopped it before it went too far, but I didn't. And I regret it. I regret hurting you like this."

John's anger began to ebb, replaced by a tumult of conflicting emotions. The sincerity in Jane's voice and her admission of regret struck a chord within him. His own guilt for what had transpired between him and Audrey weighed heavily on his conscience.

He took a deep breath, his voice tinged with a mixture of hurt and vulnerability. "Why, Jane? Why did you let it happen?"

Jane's eyes welled with tears. "I can't explain it fully, John. It's like we got lost in the moment, and before we knew it, it was too late to turn back. I should have stopped it, I know. I should have thought about you, about us. I made a terrible mistake."

Mark added, his voice low and regretful, "I don't want to come between you two. I never meant for any of this to happen."

John's gaze shifted between Jane and Mark, a mix of pain and understanding coursing through him. He was torn between anger and empathy, between the pain of betrayal and the realisation that he, too, had crossed lines he shouldn't have.

Jane's tears fell freely as she continued to speak, her voice laced with genuine remorse. "I love you, John. I messed up, and I don't know if you can forgive me, but I want you to know the truth."

How does John respond?
