A New Sibling

Sure enough Clara was in the Spanish classroom when Jessica arrived sitting near the back and Jessica went over to greet her. Clara gave Jessica a warm, awkward hug that definitely made it feel like she was embracing the notion that the two were sisters. She mentioned that her grandparents had both lived in the United States for decades at this point but their English still wasn’t that great. They were both able to get by for the most part but they both had rather heavy accents, preferred to hang out in more Spanish speaking neighborhoods, and preferred to speak in their native language while at home. Clara had taken Spanish because it would help her communicate with them plus it looked good on a resume.

Jessica discussed her mom’s job at the hospital and plans to get into the medical field herself. She had heard a few stories about difficulties with patients that didn’t speak English and that caused her to think that learning a bit of Spanish herself could be useful. The ability to at least give simple instructions like “breath in slowly,” or ask questions like “do you have any allergies,” seemed like it could be damn useful additions to her skill set. Without having to sit around waiting for a translator it could definitely save time and possibly even lives in certain situations.

A good amount of the rest of their conversation wound up being a discussion on the benefits and drawbacks of organic farming. Jessica hadn’t given the issue much thought or research so she couldn’t say much on the subject but she had heard people argue passionately in favor of the organic side before so it was a bit unusual to hear Clara taking the other side with strong conviction.

She talked a little bit about studies indicating that those who eat organic produce actually get sick more frequently than those that rely on conventional, modern farming. After class she went on a little bit of a rant about some people being way too into nature itself as perfect. “Evolution is a bullshit, half-assed, jumbled together mishmash process where if not everyone dies, it’s good enough. Sure some people are greedy fucks that’ll cut corners or sell stuff they know is shit to make money but to think that we can’t use our brains and chemicals and shit we learn to improve the process is just asinine.”

Gerald’s calculus class didn’t end until two hours after Jessica’s Spanish so she spent a little bit of time chatting with her after class. Well, being chatted at really. Clara was incredibly passionate and loved to talk. When she talked about some of the chemistry involved with pesticides Jessica couldn’t help but wish Gerald was there. Not just because he might have a little bit more to talk about but because that might be a common interest him and Clara could bond over. After a little while though Jessica did begin to feel a little guilty about leaving Lily alone to do all the work moving stuff while she just sat talking to Clara so after about a half hour she figured she needed to at least go to her apartment and try to move some stuff over. She said goodbye to Clara and sighed as her round ass walked away. She was hot and seemed to have a bit of a scientific mindset which felt like at least a good starting point for a relationship with her brother. As Jessica opened the apartment door she couldn’t help but be impressed by how well Lily had done with no prep time and nothing packed up before hand. The TV and video games were gone from the living room, all the food and plates were gone from the kitchen, she checked the bedrooms and saw that not only were the clothes gone but the sheets and blankets too. At this point it seemed everything left was large furniture that wouldn’t even fit in her car. Jessica and Clara checked the bathroom to at least see if there was anything in there but got a surprise as they opened the door.

As Jessica stood in front of the open bathroom door she began to think that when Lily had mentioned wanting to ‘relieve herself’ in that text earlier it may have not been a pooping or peeing issue. Clara shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know, I guess we’ll need to speak with her about that. But we probably shouldn’t worry about it too much today. I think you’ve done enough, this place is practically empty and all we have left is the large furniture.”

Lily looked like he kind of agreed but before he voiced his opinion he looked at Jessica as if he needed to know what she thought before saying anything. “Yeah, Clara’s right. I mean this is still a trial move right? I’m not sure where we’d put the beds and mattresses to begin with and if things don’t work out it’d be a shame to need to lug these all the way back here. These can stay here until we figure out if the Jade thing is permanent or not.”

Lily nodded and agreed. Clara stood up and looked at the other two women, “So I am guessing you have a final load of stuff in your car then? Well, me and Jess will follow you and at least help you unload. Come on, let’s get moving!”

Jessica stood up and followed Clara, “You heard the lady, let’s get this done.”

Lily obediently followed behind her daughters and with their help finished unloading his SUV while Lily was showered with compliments for her ingenuity of stopping at a couple of fast food joints and a grocery store on the first trip back to the apartment to see if they had any extra boxes laying about that she could have. That was all true but it still seemed impressive that so much had been moved in just a few hours. As they moved the last few boxes into the house and sat down to rest there was a strange gurgling noise that helped Jessica quickly realize at least part of how Lily was able to do so much so quickly. She didn’t have much breakfast this morning and the girls realized she hadn’t taken a lunch break yet.

Jessica was going to say something but Clara beat her to it by going to the food that Lily had brought over and tossing her a bag of chips. “Here, to hold you off. Call Sarah and tell her that when Gerald gets off of school today we’re all going to dinner together and I’m buying. Nothing expensive just a fast food somewhere between here and there. You earned it mom.”

Once again Jessica took Clara’s lead and told her mother that was the plan. Just out of curiosity Jessica texted the plan for tonight and said that Clara was taking them all out for dinner and both moms would be there. With the amount of information that everyone had about one another it was no surprise when Gerald responded with a thumbs up rather than a, “who is Clara,” like part of her brain still expected. Apparently thanks to the Random Remote Jessica and Gerald had an 18 year old sister just enter the family out of nowhere and nobody seemed to be giving it a second thought aside from herself.
