Insight Check: Failed!

“I accept your training, Sensei! This is gonna be awesome!”

You keep your eyes closed, intently waiting for the voice of Sensei. At last, he breaks the silence. “And open your eyes… now!”

You launch your eyelids up, now revealing a cave full of… black. “It’s no use, Sensei,” you lament. “I still can’t see anything.”

“It’s so curious…” Sensei ponders. “This is exactly how I learned the Secret Technique. It’s almost as though your mind is still stuck in the old way of doing things, back when the world was plagued by HMs… You may be unable to grasp this new power because it contradicts who you are. Your very identity seems to oppose this concept.”

“Well… what do we do!? I wanna be able to see in the dark!”

Sensei pauses for a moment, stroking his beard thoughtfully. Assuming he has a beard, which you can’t actually verify. “There is one thing we could try… hehehe…”

You eagerly ask, “What is it? I’ll give anything a try!”

“Hmm… no, no. It’s too dangerous. You probably couldn’t handle it. Such power could be too much for you.”

“I can handle it!” you argue. “Don’t underestimate me. I already have five Gym Badges, soon to be six! If it’s to learn something as cool as seeing in the dark, I can take whatever you throw at me!”

Several seconds pass with nothing audible except Sensei’s heavy breathing. “Very well then. If you believe you can handle it, then I will believe in you. Listen carefully and follow my instructions to the letter. If you do not, or cannot succeed, then the ritual will fail and your body will be forfeit.”

R-Really? Your body will be forfeit? This sounds awfully serious. You just wanted to see in the dark!
