Lifting Athena was a mistake.

Sal is in bed with her phone, keeping as still as possible when the tap comes at her door.

Frowning, she pulls up her covers.

“Yeah?”

“It’s me,” Athena says. “Can I come in?”

“It’s your house.” Sal sets her phone aside.

Athena lets herself in, closing the door quietly behind her. She wears a tiny pair of shorts and an undershirt. It’s the first time Sal has seen her without a bra. “Do you always go to bed this early?”

“Only when I’m crippled.”

“I was afraid of that. I brought Icy Hot.”

“What? You thought I didn’t already have that because I’m broke and homeless?” Sal asks.

“Do you already have it?”

“No.”

“Want me to put some on you?” Athena stands by the bed, smiling down at her.

“I’m not dressed.”

“That will make it even easier,” Athena replies, tossing the bottle in the air and catching it. “It’s like you knew I was coming.”

“I didn’t.”

“Oh. Then what’s the occasion?”

Sal rolls her eyes. “Actually, I was thinking about having some personal time. Today was stressful.”

“Oh, candid. How very CCL of you.” Sal sits elegantly on the edge of the bed. “Want some help?”

“Oh god. I can only imagine what kind of favor you’re going to ask for if you’re literally in here trying to seduce me.”

“I was actually just going to put some Icy Hot on your back, but I’m keeping my options open now that I know you’re not dressed and feeling flirty.”

“I’m crippled. You are massively misunderstanding the situation.”

“Hmm.” Athena cocks her head. “If you’re crippled, doesn’t that mean you need more help?”

“This guy.” Sal pulls her toy out from under the sheet.

“I’m surprised Meri isn’t face deep in you right now. I thought she’d make you wear that costume to bed.”

“I don’t know what she’s doing tonight,” Athena replies serenely. She holds up the vibe. “Can I borrow this?”

Sal blinks several times. “Excuse me?”

“What? That’s a normal thing for someone to ask you here,” Athena replies with a shrug.

“No, it’s not.”

“See? Everyone does this.” Athena shakes her head. “Everyone either assumes we’re hornier than we really are or that we fake the whole horny thing. The truth is in the middle.”

“OK. Sure.”

“Sure, as in, I can borrow it?”

Sal laughs. “I guess.”
