A Marvelous Day Off Pt4 Spider Date

Chapter 245 by Wolf13

"Well that wasn't what I was expecting!"

Walt laughed along with Gwen. "Me neither!" He raised his glass of Scotch. "But fun in it's own way. To the delightfully unexpected?"

Gwen smiled and tapped her cocktail against his glass meeting his eyes and holding them. "To great unexpectations," she winked.

They both smiled thinking about earlier... and what lay ahead for them.

-Earlier-

*Crash!*

*Whir!* *Clink!* *Clank!*

Walt sighed. "This is my fault." He ducked a car flying overhead that had gotten thrown through the air. Several robot tentacles came at him from out of the smoke and he extended his own to ward them off. "I should have expected something like this to happen."

*Kazap!* *Thwip, Thwip*

"It's fine," Gwenom said her spider sense alerted her and she back flipped avoiding a blast of electricity and shooting back webs at the guy with electric powers in a green and yellow costume. "Oddly these things just happen and you get sorta used to it!"

*Woosh* *Pow!* *Bang!*

There's the sound of engines and maniacal laughter as the green suited rider on the glider comes back around preparing to throw another explosive. But he gets kicked by a red and blue suited Spider-Man. "I'm glad for the help! Sorry for interrupting... and sorry for mistaking you guys for bad guys for a moment there!"

"You're no match you knock off copycat for the superior-oof!" *Wham!* *Crunch!*

Walt smiled. "It's fine Spider-Man!" Octavious was saying something about his superiority so Walt punched him while he was monologing. "Happy to help!" He twisted the robots faceplate off as he disabled it. "Don't call me a knock off you robotic imposter... Guys! Heads-up!" He tossed the robot-Dok Ock into the air hitting the Robot-Green Goblin.

*Thwip* *Thwap* "Crash!* *Kaboom!*

Gwenom and Spider-Man shot webbing at the airborne tangled twosome and swung them down to crash into the robot- Electro setting off the pumpkin bombs in a big explosion of robot parts.

Gwenom dusted off her hands. "And that takes care of that!"

Spider-Man landed down nearby. "Whew! Thanks for the assist uhh... Spider-Woman and Cowboy Ock?" He asked. "The Lone Octopus and Spider-Ninja? Who are you guys anyway?"

"Oof," Walt said. He looked at Gwen. "Is it always like this?"

She sighed. "Yeah. Pretty much. You get used to it. *Ahem* You're Spider-Man of this world, I'm Spider-Woman of another and he's kinda new at the superhero thing though he's got tons of experience. People have just been calling him the Masked Man for now though..." she raises her eyebrow giving Walt some side eye chuckling. "The robot octopus guy made some fair points "Copy cat"?"

Spider-Man nodded. "Yeah. "Copy cat" is shorter, catchier and you keep the alliteration thing going... but it's probably taken already."

Walt sighed. "Yeah thanks guys but I don't think we need to workshop my "hero name" on this. Masked Man is fine. Shouldn't we be getting out of here, Peter? Uhh... Peter pumkin eater?"

Gwenom facepalmed while Spider-Mans masks eyes got huge. "Dude!" Gwen said.

"Dude?! Did you almost spill the beans and cover it with a nursery rhyme?!" Spider-Man said.

Walt nodded. "Sorry. My bad. This secret ID thing is killing me. I dunno why. I'm so used to codenames so you'd think it'd be a cinch. Maybe I gotta mental block?"

Gwenom sighed. "Yeah I guess we better get outta here... so much for taking in a show before dinner..."

Peter pointed out a roof top they could use and they started swinging away. "Awwww crap! You two were on a date? I'm sorry. What were you gonna see?"

"We were going to see Aladdin but changed our minds," Gwenom said. "Walt said "New York, New York" was done in his world so we decided to see that."

Spider-Man laughed. "Start spreading the news!"

"I'm leaving today!" Gwen sang.

Walt shook his head. They both had perfect spider pitch of course. "I want to be a part of it!"

"New York, New York!" They sang together laughing swinging through the skyline.

"That was nice of you."

Walt blinked. "It was? Oh! You mean offering Pete help if more robots show up? I mean if that's happening regularly it's probably connected somehow. Plus those were so obviously fakes. They had on the old suits, which was nice to see if I'm honest. With so many heroes and villains MIA this place has got a power vacuum situation going on and we should help-"

"That's not what I meant," she said and smiled softly sipping her drink. "You don't have to brush it off. That was nice. Thank you."

Walt shrugged smiling slightly. "I know losing your Peter was hard. It's easy to see how seeing them alive and well on other worlds makes you happy. I just figured that was more important."

Gwen smiled and touched his hand. "Most guys would get pissy about that... having their date crashed. But not you?"

Walt laughed. "Not me. If it makes you happy it's fine. And who would I be getting upset with? That's not your Peter. Just like you're not his Gwen." He took her hand. "Just like though you resemble her and act a bit like her sometimes you're not my wife. It's foolish to be jealous over the dead. Most of them don't want that. They usually just want their loved ones to be happy." He smiled. "Most of the time that's how life and death work."

She nodded smiling sadly. "Which is why... I do and don't want to ask you about Peter..."

Walt nodded. "I likely could you know... but it's no guarantee of happiness for you. That's the original meaning and purpose behind Necromancer. A speaker for the dead. Most of the dead are generally content... it's the living that aren't. That need to find...acceptance."

Gwen nodded and smiled at him sadly. "Like you did? Speaking from experience?"

Walt nodded. "I wasted so much time. Consumed by my inability to move on. Sure it got me where I am now... and I think the journey is important. But I lost a lot of things on mine. I out lived almost all my old friends. Missed so many things..."

He looked into his glass. ""Never let go". I am what my grandfather made me in a way. Those words are as much a curse as a blessing. Looking back I think they brought him as much misery as happiness too. His old cases. My parents deaths protecting me. Finding me and bringing me home. Struggling to save that home. My struggle to keep it. My fruitless quest. Never letting go can keep you going through a lot but it doesn't always guarantee happiness either." He smiled at her. "People like you and Peter are inspiring to me. Thank you for that."

He finished his drink and gestured to the bartender for another. Gwen smiled. It was a nice place. Small. Setup like a speakeasy. They'd eaten "gourmet" hotdogs at the restaurant until it was time and then entered the little bar through the secret entrance via the old fashioned telephone booth. It was a surprisingly nice surprise. Both the food in the establishment and the drinks were top notch. A very unique experience.

"You're welcome," she said. "And thank you." He raised an eyebrow and she continued. "You helped me. Helped my dad. Continue helping in so many ways. Helping so many. I find that inspiring myself... and it's one of your best qualities."

The radio started playing I Want A Good Man as she reached out stroke his hand. "It's attractive." She looked into his eyes. "You're a good man, Walt... and I like you."

Walt took her hand. "I like you too, Gwen... May I have this dance?"

She smiled and nodded. "I'd like that."

They stepped into the small corner and started to dance. Gwen laughed.

"What?" Walt asked.

"This," she said. "I never danced to this old time stuff before. It always seemed so..."

Walt smiled softly. "Corney?"

She smiled and nodded. "But it's good... really good."

"Want to finish our drinks and go hit a club?" He asked as the music switched to It's Been A Long, Long Time.

She saw him smile and shook her head then leaned it against him. "Not just yet. One if your favorites?"

Walt nodded as she stepped in even closer. "It is... and so is this." He brushed her hair from her face.

She watched him swallow and she did too. His face got closer to hers. "Gwen," she heard him whisper.

Walt felt her pulling him against her with one arm as her other reached up behind his neck. "Walt," he heard her whisper as they drew each other into the kiss.

The bartender smiled and watched them dance kissing in the small corner through We'll Meet Again, Fly Me To The Moon and then I Did It My Way. He'd done this job long enough. He nodded and got their check ready.

Gwen felt his heart pounding and Walt felt her let out a little trembling sigh. They smiled at each other quietly nodded. They walked back to the bar and finished their drinks. Walt didn't even look at the check. He just pulled out several large bills and placed them down.

He offered Gwen his arm but she shook her head. She pulled his arm around her instead as she put hers around his waist as Can't Help Falling In Love played. Walt nodded in agreement and held her close to him... right where she belonged. The words "Never let go" was in their thoughts as they exited the bar and restaurant.

"Dancing?" Walt asked.

She nodded as they turned down an alley. "At home," she said suiting up smiling. "And maybe along the way."

Walt smiled thinking about their earlier "dancing" too putting on his mask. "You read my mind."

The night was still young. They were sure they could find some more trouble on their way home.
