Building supplies

You leave a note for Garcia so that, when she wakes up, she knows that she has the rest of the day off. Once outside the room, you tell Mills to have everyone meet you in the lobby. With Team 1 being down a member, you assign them guard duty. Team 2 is tasked with making another run for food and water. Team 3, the team Allen is on, is tasked with gathering the building supplies.

Pointing out the construction site on a map, you inform Team 3, "Here is where the building supplies are. We make our way there on foot, and Allen says there should be a couple of flatbed trucks. We take one, load it up, and make as many runs as we can. I'll be coming with you guys to make it go faster. Any questions?" You are met with shaking heads. Now able to fully gear up, you lead SGT Foreman, Allen, and Zach to the build site. Once there, you spot a flatbed truck, still in decent condition. Allen runs to the trailer where they keep the vehicle keys and forces it open with a crowbar. Foreman clears the trailer and they both rush in, emerging moments later, triumphantly, with the keys.

On the first load, everything goes smoothly. The truck starts on the first try, and you load it to the brim, so to speak, it is a flatbed after all, and make it back, where other residents are waiting to unload. The second goes much the same. It's the third trip where things start to go a bit sideways. You roll up to the construction site, hopping out of the cab, while Foreman and Zach hop off the back, when you sense something is wrong. You motion to the team to take cover, and they all dive behind whatever they can find. Turns out, you made it barely in time. A group of zombies passes right through where your group would be loading. Seemingly oblivious to your presence, they slowly amble forward. You hold your breath, and can tell the other three are doing likewise.

For what feels like an eternity, they pass by. You finally start to breathe again when only a handful are left, when suddenly one picks it's head up and sniffs the air. It pauses, looking around, then snaps its head directly to the spot where Zach is hiding. It opens its mouth to inform the others. You don't give it a chance. You swing your rifle over and shoot it right in the head. "Open fire!" you scream, as you shift aim to a second zombie, blowing its brains out with two shots. By now, the rest have caught on, and start screaming as they charge. The other three take aim and open fire as well, raining bullets on the oncoming horde. They are fast and relentless, and you know you would never make it to the truck in time, not without losing someone, so you stand and fight. Bullets rip across the ever shrinking gap between you and the starving undead, as they inch closer, even as their fellows drop. The noise of gunfire and screams of the dead rages in your ears, until suddently, it stops. Your breaths comes in ragged gasp and you look around, seeing no more zombies. The only sound you hear is a "click, click, click," and you look down to see Foreman pulling the trigger on a rifle than ran out of ammo a long time ago. "Soldier, they're dead. Reload."

Looking down at her weapon with a blank stare, intelligence finally returns her face as she loads another magazine into her gun. "Take up defensive postions. I don't want to be surprised by someone that is attracted by the sound we made." The four of you keep watch, but an hour passes and nothing else approaches. You make more runs, on much higher alert, and by the end of the day, you have all the materials you need. At the end of the last run, you finish unloading, congragulate your team, and almost drop your gear and go to sleep in the lobby.
