What's next?
A Lesson on Fate.
Amy barely slept that night her mind racing with thoughts of the next day.
The little sleep she did get was full of embarrassing nightmares. For the first time she considered going out on her balcony her pussy ached to be touched after the week of neglect. She finally stopped staring at her ceiling around 8am and got out of bed to the smell of her father cooking breakfast.
Coming into the main room of the apartment she sat down at their table. Across from her mother, who looked up from the article she was reading in a magical periodical.
Her parents were both professors and had bonded over a love of a great many nerdy things.
Her mother was an expert in destiny research and worked deciphering prophesy.
Her father was a completely non-magical professor of various advanced branches of physics. Together they had become a power couple in their respective fields.
The concept of red and blue shifting light as well as time dilations had apparently been revolutionary in the magic community.
Where as her father was slow dripping his higher understanding of the universe as it was allowed by the magical community.
Amy walked in on the two having a very boring conversation on the differences in Peer review process between the two communities and the pros and cons of each.
They quickly got to a stopping point and turned their attention to Amy. Who was happy to tell them about her first week back at school with some obvious omissions. As they ate and chatted as a family the thought suddenly occurred to Amy that her Mom might be able to help her get out of her situation.
She focused on her food looking for an opening to naturally pivot the conversation. She found she didn't even have to when her mother went into a story from one of her classes. They were beginning a module on Oedipus Rex and running from fate. Amy tuned in on her mothers story.
"And of course, everyone in the class are college freshman. Barely licensed to cast class one spells unsupervised. But as soon as they hear that advanced fate altering rituals are possible everyone wants to be destined for greatness, as if being destined means it comes easier somehow."
"Oh come on, Have these kids never read a book?" Her father interjected.
"Exactly" Her mother continued "Being destined is a curse. It means no matter what you do the outcome is set. How boring is that?" Her Mom replied
"But Mom, arn't you on a counsel of fate weavers?" Amy asked always a little confused by her mothers very nebulous work.
"Yes honey, but we deal with much bigger issues and meddle as little as possible. Anytime you alter fate you remove future options because you're making a bunch of choices for yourself and the world right then. If you're not careful you end up saving the world from the black mega-**** but starting WW2."
"But can't you just alter things again, keep changing things until they're good?" Amy asked hopefully.
"You sound like my students!" Her mother laughed. "No, Once you alter fate, once you've taken a nebulous ball of potential and refined it into a particular future happening, you're pretty much stuck until you're far enough out from the events. Experiments in double manipulation have always gone poorly, every time without fail there's unintended negatives, that practice has been outlawed for centuries." Amy tried not to show how disappointed she was in that information.
She was stuck with the mess she'd made. She excused herself a short time later and went back into her room. She began trying to decide what to wear today. This felt like a test...
