Group bonding

The creak of an open door stemmed from the hallway “Juniper” emerged following the sound of her footsteps, her eyes back to their familiar shade of hazel, her appearance no different from any other day, if anything, she seemed to have more kick in every step she took.

“Hey guys!” she greeted everyone, her voice the usual vibrant chirp. “So glad you all could make it. Can I have some help in the kitchen?”

Turning to Daisy, she bowed down with a curtsy. “Dear madam Daisy, would you, as the expert for mashed potatoes, be so kindly to help us prepare that delicate dish?"

Daisy returned with her knees bent and head bowed down in return, replying simply, "I shall do as such."

“Ethan, can you help me with the turkey?” Juniper asked the self-assured man. “I could use a strong pair of hands to get it in the oven.” Ethan grinned, his eyes lingering on Juniper a second too long, but he obliged.

She glanced at Iris, the bookish introvert. “Iris, could you help set the table? And we can talk about that book after dinner, promise.” Iris nodded and hurried off, her nerves eased by Juniper's promise of conversation.

Finally, she turned to boisterous Liam. “Liam, can you chop the veggies for the salad? Just mind your fingers!” Liam laughed at her joke, carrying his rolls and a cutting board to the kitchen.

Juniper turned to Jake last, her eyes holding a hint of mischief. "Jake, can you uncork the wine? We've got some nice pinot noir I think you'll like."

He hesitated before moving, the scene so familiar, yet chillingly alien. Juniper watched him, a teasing glint in her eyes that he knew was far from innocent. Swallowing down a wave of unease, Jake moved to fetch the wine.

As they prepared the meal, the kitchen was filled with the sound of sizzling pans, clinking utensils, and spirited chatter. Daisy, her crimson hair tied in a bun, worked with gusto on the potatoes, periodically laughing at Liam's raucous stories from the other side of the kitchen.

Ethan, in a casual button-down, flexed his muscles, lifting the heavy turkey into the oven. Jake saw that his eyes constantly wandering to Juniper.

As if feeling Jake's intent gaze, snapped her sights onto him. Caught off guard, Jake looked back at the group to avoid eye contact, it doesn't seem that Juniper noticed Ethan yet.

Iris, her brown locks framing her freckled face, silently set the table. She added little flourishes to the setting, expressing her creativity in a quiet, unassuming manner.

Liam, with his scruffy beard and easygoing smile, joked and laughed as he chopped the vegetables, his vibrant personality filling the room.

Watching the scene unfold, Jake was filled with an unsettling mixture of relief and dread. The monster seems to be playing nice so far, but who knows what it will do for the rest of the night.
