Chapter 63

There's got to be a way you can resolve this peacefully
Remove Yu's concerns so you can find out what the big deal is
You didn't mean to scare Yu, if only you could make her see things from your point of view...! Wait. Why don't you help her see things from your perspective?
You grin.
The expression frightens Yu. "Chase, think about what you're doing."
"I'm way ahead of you," you say, cracking your knuckles. “Yu, and copy Yu, both Yu's, I claim your moral qualms about using my powers, especially for whatever's making you uncomfortable here. I have them, they're out of reach, all right? They no longer apply," you announce. "Let's talk this out like adults."
Yu, and Georgia-Yu, both exhale simultaneously, the tension in their shoulders melting away.
Yu rolls out her neck, eyes slipping closed. “Wow."
"That felt nice," says Georgia-Yu, doing the same thing.
Yu smiles up at you. "I was seriously worried that we'd do something we couldn't take back."
“And now?” you ask her.
She shrugs. “Like you said, it's likely we can change everything back to how it was. So why does it matter? Let’s do some science! You copied my mind, Chase - that's wild!"
You laugh. "I know! That's what I was saying!"
Yu's laugh joins yours.
Satisfied, you breathe a sigh of relief. You've always respected Yu's sense of ethics (especially the part where she let you copy her math homework under the guise of tutoring), but standard ethics no longer apply. Her intellect is indispensable not only to understanding these powers, but surviving them.
Georgia-Yu clears her throat. "I'm really happy you're getting along with me, Chase, but what about me? Not that it isn't fascinating to see what it's like to be Gho, she's so tall," she frames her waist with her hands, distracted by her cousin's body for a second, "but Aiden was freaked before you copied me over him, and I'm still freaked - I may not have any moral qualms about you using your powers, but that doesn't mean I want to stop existing anytime soon."
"When you copied me, you also copied our friendship," Yu explains, pushing her glasses up her nose. "It's what makes duplicating a person so dangerous - a duplicate is no less valid than the original, to the point where any distinction is meaningless."
Georgia-Yu concurs. "Philosophically speaking, if our friendship means anything to you, deleting any instance of me is indistinguishable from ****."
"Gho - well, me - she's right," says Yu, with a sigh. "Your relationship with me and your relationship with my copy should be of equivalent value."
"And for the record, I resent being called a copy," huffs Georgia-Yu, folding her arms irritably. "I don't feel like a copy. The second you copied my mind, you split me along two paths. On both paths, I'm me. A different me, but still."
You feel more confused than before, but you're also beginning to understand what upset Yu so much in the first place. It's not so much what you did, but that it can't be as lightly undone as you thought. The full weight of the situation begins to settle on your shoulders.
"What does that mean for us?" you ask. "In layman's terms."
Yu taps her chin in thought. "Well, we're two similar, but distinct individuals. The closest thing I can compare it to... it's like we're sisters."
"Exactly. Well said," says Georgia-Yu.
"Oh. I just put what you said in different words," she demurs.
"They were good words."
"No, yours were better."
Observing the two's interactions is uncanny. Despite Yu and her copy looking completely different and inhabiting different bodies, Georgia-Yu is just as much Yu as Yutong herself is. Despite being soft-spoken, Yu's always been your most reliable, responsible friend. Now there are two of her. And while Georgia (in Aiden's clothes and former body) continues her increasingly **** search for her brother, you can't help but wonder what life would be like having not one, but two Yutongs on call, whose help you could rely on.
Maybe it's better not to think about it, but the thought is already giving you ideas.
"Hey. We're still experimenting, aren't we?" you question.
"Of course," says Yu.
"So long as we're not deleting me, sure," says Georgia-Yu.
You lift your hands placatingly. "I'm sure you guys can come up with an optimal way to sort this out so nobody gets hurt, but in the meantime, why don't we keep running with what we have?"
Both Yu's answer in unison, but in different voices. "What do you have in mind?"
What DO you have in mind?
