“Ack!” you cry out as Ellen throws her arms around you and squeezes. You’re on her front porch, and you hope her family isn’t home. It’s late afternoon. You pry her off and step back. It’s too hot for that kind of behavior.

OK, so you had not realized that she wanted a job that badly. You sit on her porch swing and she joins you excitedly. You’ve never seen her like this. You understand, but it’s still an adjustment. Helping her make it with Nadia has transformed her. She’s still very closeted, but she carries herself differently. She smiles more. She’s more confident and less clingy to you and Stef.

“I think Blockbuster’s hiring,” you say. “If it’s that ****.”

“I already applied there. I haven’t gotten a call. Oh my gosh.” She shakes her fists. “Yes. I can really be a mechanic?”

“Well, you can start learning from Stef’s dad. Who is very nice. That won’t make you a mechanic. I mean, Stef’s been fixing cars since she was six and she’s not a mechanic. You probably have to go to school for it at some point or something.” You shrug. “But it’s a job.”

Ellen leans close. “I’ve been talking to Nadia every night.”

“Really?” Good for her. “Get any action.”

“Oh my gosh.” She pokes you with her elbow. “No. Her family is like classy. She can’t be with a girl. That’s the problem. I need a car so I can take her out. You know?”

“Sure,” you reply. You understand. You have concerns, but you understand. Did Ellen not pay any attention to Nadia during high school? “You really like her,” you say worriedly.

“She’s amazing.”

Well, sure. Nadia’s pretty, she has a hot bod, she knows how to use it, and she’s going places with her life. What’s not to like? But has Ellen forgotten that Nadia has always gone through boys the way that you go through paper towels?

You don’t think that Nadia has a gay bone in her body. It’s more likely that she likes some companionship with the added bonus of a hard cock without having to bother with dumb, smelly guys. You would also be surprised if she’s not seeing a guy or two at the moment as well.

Ellen’s quiet for a moment, staring into the distance.

“I still can’t believe we did that,” she says, shooting you a look.

“Hey, we don’t hook up in front of people because we feel like it,” you say defensively. “We were setting an example. For you and Nadia. For the mood.”

“Oh,” Ellen replies. She’s quiet for a moment. Then she hugs you again, tighter this time. You put up with it, although it’s still way too hot for this. You hear her sniffling.
