Chapter 4
by Squick n' Amore
What is behind the first door?
A...bedroom?
With Esther right beside me, I unsheathed my claymore from my side and I held it in front of me. I kicked open the door with the missing torches, the drops of sweat that formed on my forehead made the chilly dungeon air colder. Esther tossed her torch in the room, lighting up the dark area. Inside the room, a cluttered desk sat on the opposite wall. A bookshelf separated the desk from a dusty bed. As I walked in, my eyes searched frantically looking for signs of traps or monsters, while Esther explored the books, I took a look at the desk. A notebook sat open with unfinished text, laid upon sheets of scratch paper. Several old ragged leather-bound books on its left, tiny holes plagued the text-ridden papers and books. A bag of gems of various colors sat quietly on the corner of the table.
“Those look like slime cores.”
A squeal unbefitting of myself leaked from my mouth from the sudden appearance of Esther behind me.
Esther let out a couple of cute chuckles, knowing that she did a great job scaring me.
“Oh my Jasper, I didn’t expect you to have such a cute scream.”
“Shut up…” I could feel my cheeks heat up, then let out a frustrated sigh that echoed in the room.
“Hehehe…I’m just kidding.” Esther patted my head. “Anyways, this is speculation, but I think this room belonged to an alchemist. There are a ton of rare tomes and scriptures, they’re in a language that I don't recognize, but the etchings are similar to modern day Alchemist’s notes.”
Alchemists are an alchemy focused class that can only be achieved after reaching the peak of magic, in other words, it’s an ascended class. I’ve never seen an alchemist before, they’re pretty rare amongst adventurers since most people like to put their focus on combat related, so most mage ascensions chose to become an archmage.
“Are you Sure about that?” I asked while I started to pile and straighten the pile of loose writing, trying to read the writing but failing because it’s in a foreign language.
“This notebook has illustrations of many alchemist experiments, I can’t even comprehend a quarter of the stuff here, it’s hard to imagine a regular person obtaining all this knowledge.”
I started reevaluating everything in the room, grabbing and swiping everything that wasn’t bolted down and tossing it into my adventurer’s sack. If what Esther said was true, then everything in this room is incredibly valuable. Even without the Alchemist class, if this information is dissected, then it can be used by even regular magi.
After making sure we cleaned the room for all valuables, we left the room. The ambiance of the hallway was the same as before, however, it didn’t feel as nerve-racking as we first got here.
“I wonder what kind of person lived in this dungeon,” Esther asked as we started to walk again.
“We’ll probably learn more if we look through the journal, but for now I want to get out of here as fast as we can.” Even if I am more comfortable here now, it’s still not a good thing to stay here for too long, we still don’t know if we’re safe yet.
