The words on the page seemed to twist and contort until they resembled something resembling English. The bile rose in her throat as she read them.

"A familiar spirit is a servant and companion in inhuman form, one of the ancient race of Fairy who have been bound by magic to serve the sorcerer. It is of the simplest class of operation to perform, and very easy to work.

Stand before the altar, with the Book of Fairy laid at the center, either open or closed. Each spirit is bound to the book itself, and may be called forth most easily and by a sorcerer of very little power. The words of summoning are as such-

Mazu Toha

Yehu Toma

and then one in their native tongue intones

and then one simply requests the spirit they wish to receive. A selection of spirits bound to the Book of Fairy is provided below.

The familiar is then bound to the sorcerer for the rest of their mortal life, and will obey most commands, though certain spirits are more hesitant to obey. The most vital commands are "hide thyself", which shall prompt the spirit to turn invisible to mortal eyes, "leave me be", which shall cause the familiar to depart for some time, and "seek out x", which will cause the spirit to search for who or whatever x may entail."
