Another Day, Another Video

“Have you seen this?!” Debbi exasperated.

“Seen it? I helped write it. Where do you think they got all the info?” Jody responded. “But it's about me! And half the things it says aren’t even true!” Debbi complained. “It’s about No-E, it's a character, a persona, it doesn’t have to be true. It’s what people wanna hear, It’s what sells.” Jody argued. “And it would be a great boost to your rap career, if you knew what was good for you.”

“But I don’t want a rap career! I want the career I built, I wanna go back to my office!” Debbi moaned. “Fun you should say that.” Jody answered ominously as they rounded the corner onto the set. Debbi froze, she couldn’t believe the sight before her. The set was an exact replica of her very own office. “Carol was kind enough to send over some photos so they could get the scene just right.” Jody said, bringing Debbi back to reality “Now you’d better go get changed, you’ve got a music video to shoot.”

Back in the dressing room Debbi was actually with the wardrobe she found waiting for her, a navy blue business suit complete with jacket, not unlike her own, though this one was far nicer than anything she could afford. Even the knickers were acceptable, a black lacy pair that hugged her nicely. Debbi took a moment to admire how they flattered her in the mirror. Jody had pitched instead a pair of hello kitty panties, an idea which, luck for Debbi, Dolla had vetoed.

Debbi’s satisfaction with the provided outfit came to an end when she searched for the accompanying pants, or a skirt perhaps? But found nothing. “Of course.” Debbi thought. “And here comes our star!” The director smiled as Debbi made her way on set. It was surreal standing in an exact replica of her own office. There was at least one notable difference, the walls of this office were lined with DollaXL posters. Debbi shook her head, what kind of respectable business person would hang posters like that in the workplace, like it was some college dorm room, before the sight of her own bare legs emerging from beneath her suit jacket reminded her. “Right. I’m Miz No-E”

“Alright let’s start with you seated behind the desk, then Dolla will come in and start his thing.” The director instructed Debbi “after the first verse, when the sample track comes in, you climb up on the desk and start dancing.” “Oh! I almost forgot, here's your ID badge.” He added, clipping the plastic card to her lapel. “An ID badge? But this has my real name on it!” Debbi complained. Jody jumped in “Of course, you want people to know you’re a real business woman right? Not some streetwalker they hired to be in a music video.” Debbi frowned, she guessed Jody had a point.
