Brenda makes you wait outside her office

Nurse Bates catches you at the end of the day in the trainees' dressing room. She sends you, Jennifer, and Kelly to Brenda's office.

"No, don't change," Nurse Bates says. "Just go straight there."

You tremble. There is no reason for it. But you do stop to urinate and wash your hands and face and comb your hair.

When you arrive, Kelly is in Brenda's waiting area. Jennifer's blonde friend is sitting on a chair, chewing nervously. Then she blows a pink bubble until it pops.

"Can I have some gum?" you ask.

"Oh sure," Kelly says. "Everybody laughs at me for chewing bubble gum. But there are worse habits, haha. Here."

Kelly gives you a piece of bubble gum.

"Yes. Thank you."

Habits. Miss Charity smokes. You didn't know that when she was interviewing you.

The gum is a sweet strawberry banana flavor. Kelly laughs when you blow a bubble at her.

Jennifer comes out. She turns back to the door. "Thank you Ms. Box, I will," she says. "Kel, she wants you next."

Kelly laughs nervously. She puts away her gum, peers at her reflection in the window, and steps up.

"Close the door," Brenda says.

Click goes the latch.

While you're waiting, a thin woman with a hooded sweatshirt, the hood pulled up, sits down on the other side of the room.

Scars and tattoos on her wrists. Betty Box.

You chew gum but do not blow bubbles at Betty.

Some time later Kelly emerges. Her cheeks are pink and her chin is wet. She sighs dreamily. "Oh, Brenda says to send Betty in."

Betty pushes herself to her feet and walks, head low, toward the door of Brenda's office.

"Close it and come right here," you hear Brenda say.

Not long after, your phone chimes.

"Close the door," Brenda tells you.
