Chapter 4
The artifact
How does it work?
Harrison clutches the artifact the entire grueling way back. What did it mean? Why would that person give it to him?
They finally arrive back at the chambers at around midnight, exhausted, Harrison decided to think about it tomorrow. The loud stomping noises wake him up from his slumber, 'Daytime already?' He thought to himself. Guards started pouring out of the entrance as Harrison remembered about his artifact, hastily hiding it in his "bed." "Here's breakfast." The guard hands Harrison a platter of bread and water, to which he devours instantly. Panting, he looks back at the artifact. 'Does this thing have any magical power? If so, there....I could actually have a chance of getting out...' He retreats to his bed while the guard's back faces him. On the artifact lies a certain symbol.....Harrison was sure he'd seen it somewhere before in schooling.
The artifact seemed to be able to dispense some sort of chalky substance. "I might try making the symbol then." Harrison slowly and methodically creates the symbol, being very anxious while doing so, afraid the guard will look behind him and notice something. After a good 5 minutes, it's done. 'Wait, I think I know what this symbol represents...' Harrison puts his mind together, 'Could this be a time artifact? No fucking way.' His eyes go wide with shock yet excitement. He could likely just freeze all the guards including Yelena so he could escape the chambers and gain freedom again. The chambers had a secret exit leading multiple miles away from the kingdom. If he could plan it out correctly....
"Um...Sir, could you come inside for a second?" The guard looks back, surprised. "Uh, what is it?" "I think there's some sort of rat in the cell, may you please exterminate it?" "The guard looks at him and rolls his eyes and unlocks the cell. He walks in the very small area, unaware of the time trap. But it didn't activate. 'What? How come it didn't work? Did I do it wrong..? Or do I have to activate it with a verbal cue?' Harrison took a gamble, "Freeze!" The faint symbol drawn on the ground illuminates in a blue aura as it instantly envelops the guard. Harrison anxiously looks across the chambers, but the other guards are either sleeping or chatting with other guards. 'Phew.' After a couple seconds the blue aura disappears and reveals the guard, unmoving. The guard is in a walking motion.
"Holy CRAP. This...it actually worked..." He made sure to keep his voice low as he examines the guard, touching him, seeing when if he'd react. But he stood frozen. He then hastily ventured in his gear, getting out a small knife, a backup key, and some rations. He hides it in his "bed" yet again.
This was a good test. Harrison didn't have a need for the guard anymore, as he didn't want to him to know that he actually had an artifact. "U-Unfreeze?" The symbol on the ground quickly fades away as the guard starts moving again. "Where is it-" "Oh, thank you kind sir!" The guard is confused and sees a dead rat at his feet. 'When did I-. Oh well.' The guard exits the cell and locks it. Harrison giggles to himself. Next festival. Yes, that's when he'd strike.
