Bowling with Anna, Jennifer, Gloria, and Brenda Box

You sort out things for how people are getting home. Dot is taking your car. You're going with Jennifer and Kelly in Jen's car. Someone will drop you home later. Brenda and Nurse Bates are meeting you there. Maybe Brenda has another guest. It's not clear from Kelly's explanation before you have to jump into the shower and get dry and dressed and out the door to the car.

"Where are we going, again, Kelly?" you ask once Jen gets you on the road.

"Bowling," Kelly says.

Jennifer laughs. "Brenda? Bowling?" she says. "I thought she was a fern bar type. I guess it's When in Rome, do as the Romans do." She signals for a turn onto the county road.

"This is Brenda's home town," Kelly says. "She was a junior champion and she saved the bowling alley when it was having trouble staying in business."

"Goes to show what marrying money will do," Jen says.

"Brenda's rich on her own. Not as rich as Tom Box," Kelly says. "And I think she knew him before she went away to college and stuff."

You nod. You can understand making bargains to get what you want, like Brenda marrying someone she knew in her home town who had money.

Jen laughs. "Back when Brenda was a lipstick lesbian full-time," she says.

"Tomboy," Kelly says. "Teen mom. Lipstick was college and career."

"So how do you know all this about Brenda?" Jen asks.

"Uh..." Kelly says. She blushes pink. "Pillow talk."

"Kelly," Jen says. "Why are you keeping secrets? I thought I was your best friend."

"I thought it was gonna be once? And I didn't know what to say," Kelly says. "But then Brenda invited us both out, and she said to bring Anna along when I told her you were together, and then you were late, so I'm just catching up, okay?"

"Okay," Jennifer says.

And before long you're at an old-fashioned bowling alley near downtown. You get fitted for bowling shoes -- the smallest women's size -- and meet the rest of the group. The clerk treats you as honored special guests of the alley. You suppose if Brenda is a part owner, that is exactly what you are.
