Evan's new life.

Evan opened the door to his apartment and sighed as he set his backpack down. Data entry wasn't ideal, but it paid the bills and kept him out of trouble. He went to the kitchen to prepare a frozen dinner.

A voice rang out from the other room. "Evan! How was your day?" He paused and closed his eyes. "Fine." He called back. The microwave dinged just as she responded. "Come on in here, I have something to show you!"

He turned away from the meal and headed into the other room. His wife was in bed, working on the laptop. She grinned and turned it to him. "Check it out! Another job offer, this one from that new tech firm downtown! I think I may go with it." His wife was the most sought-after software developer in their city. She was always trying to explain her work to him, which he found immensely frustrating.

Since he was kid he had dreamed of working with computers. He thought the idea of creating things from raw code and controlling vast swathes of information was the coolest job in the world. Unfortunately, it simply never clicked for him. To his disappointment, a basic C++ class in high school had proven far too complex for him. Still, he made a go of it in college only to flunk out after his first semester.

Meanwhile everyone around him seemed to be doing great. His parents were both CTOs, having worked their way up the IT ladder. His sister was a cybersecurity expert. His wife and her twin were both top-notch software developers and even his friends ran a successful web design shop. He felt like the only person in the world who couldn't sit down at a keyboard and make the computer sing.

Truth be told, he sometimes messed up with his data entry software. He'd fill in a form wrong or forget how to make an edit and be stuck redoing an hour of work. His boss had dinged him for productivity multiple times. If his mom weren't CTO he was certain he'd have been let go by now.

His eyes glazed over as his wife explained her job offer to him. Something about Ruby, or Python, or sequel - he couldn't keep them straight. She saw that he was getting confused and shut the laptop with an eye roll. She did very little to hide her disdain for his low intelligence.

"Ok, hon, it's been a long day. How about you come give mama what she needs?"

He sighed again. Long ago they worked out a system to keep her needs met.
