Chapter 17 by AttenTen AttenTen

Does April fall for it?

April sees right through her.

April's brow furrowed as she looked down at the sniveling sheep. Isabelle's act was pretty convincing, but that wasn't enough to hamper the deputy's deductive reasoning. All signs pointed to foul play, with this strange woman sitting in the center of it all. Isabelle continued weep into April's chest, a small grin spreading along her face. She was confident that she had suckered yet another rube with her charms and was already thinking of ways to dispose of the nosey deputy. Once April was out of the picture, she would finish what she started with Joe. Her smile widened as she considered arranging the bodies in a way that framed Joe for April's demise. He was a hitman, after all. It only stood to reason that he would be behind such a heinous act. It wasn't like he'd be around to defend himself; Dead men tell no tale, as they say.

The sinister sheep took a second to collect herself before returning to her simpering facade. She was getting ahead of herself. First she would have to convince this simpleminded hick to follow her to a nice secluded place where she could snuff out their worthless life. She looked up at April expecting to see the sympathetic expression that typically greeted her whenever she pulled her 'damsel in distress' act. Much to her surprise, the deputy wasn't sold in the slightest, her stony eyes seeming to look right through the sheep. Isabelle's whimpering ceased as they stared into each other's eyes and, for a brief moment, the sheep felt uneasy. If she didn't know any better, she could've sworn that April _wasn't _enraptured by her charms.

"Real cute. I can see how Texas got suckered in by you" April said as grabbed onto Isabelle's wrists and roughly pulled the sheep from off her. "Texas is the best sheriff in all the west, but damned if she can't help herself around a pretty face. Too bad for you, I ain't Texas"

"M-Miss A-April, what o-on earth are you-" the sheep began, her eyes beginning to well up again. Before she could settle back into her role, she roughly yanked along by her wrists.

"Spare me the waterworks, sweetheart!" April growled as she pushed the sheep in the direction of the desk, her right hand pinning the sheep's wrists behind her back while the left rested on the back of her head. "I don't know what's going on, but I'm detaining you until I get to the bottom of this!"

"Miss... April... you're making a horrible mistake...!" Isabelle grunted, her temper beginning to surface as tried to wrestle her head free from the fox's grip.

"I'm sure" April said as she rolled her eyes. "Why don't you drop the act and tell me what you've done with Texas?"

Isabelle's struggles ceased at that moment, her irises shrinking as the bags beneath her eyes returned. Why was this bumpkin asking about her wife-to-be? She had suspected that there was something more to their relationship, but she was happy to brush it off at the time. After all, Texas belonged to her. They were meant to be together, so there was no way that her knight in shining armor would even think of eyeing any other women. Unless... unless April was looking to steal Texas away from her!

April blinked as Isabelle's struggles intensified, an very unladylike growl rumbling from the sheep's throat as her rage boiled to the surface. After some struggling, Isabelle managed to free one of her arms and delivered a sharp elbow into April's nose. The fox held onto her muzzle as she staggered back into the cell. Isabelle was on her in an instant, rushing over and pushing her forearm into April's throat and pinning her against the rough iron bars behind her.

"You're not going to take Texas away from me, you filthy little tramp! SHE'S MINE!!!" Isabelle screeched in a crazed manner.

April had no idea what the looney sheep was going on about, but her behavior was all the proof she needed to conclude that this woman had done something to Texas. Gritting her teeth, April returned fire by slipping an uppercut past Isabelle's elbow and onto her chin. The sheep was **** back for a moment, her crazed gaze still fixed on the deputy. April smirked and began bouncing on her heels, readying herself as she got into a boxing stance.

"Sure you wanna roll with me, princess?" she asked confidently. While her combat skills paled in comparison to her boss, the fox was no slouch when it came to fisticuffs and she couldn't see herself losing to some puffed up socialite. What came next caught her by surprise as Isabelle grabbed onto the sleeves of her dress and tore them clean off, exposing two toned and muscular looking arms. April's confidence to a hit as Isabelle matched her stance perfectly. The sheep wasn't quite the priss she expected.

"What did ya expect, love? You don't get to being an assassin by being fragile!" Joe spoke up with a chuckle.

"Assassin? What?" April responded incredulously, still being very much out of the loop regarding who Isabelle was. The sheep took advantage of the momentary distraction and charged in, delivering a fierce right hook to her chin. The blow knocked April for a loop, but she was too tough to be put away by a single attack and she was quick to retaliate with a haymaker to the sheep's cheek. Isabelle grunted, but wasn't fettered as she delivered a hailstorm of punches to the fox's face and stomach. A particularly wicked hook to the gut sent April to her knees.

"Disgusting little whore..." Isabelle spat bitterly as she grabbed a handful of the fox's hair and began dragging her over to the desk. April struggled to free herself, punching at the sheep's arm and wriggling to try and pry herself free. Suddenly, she felt her the ground beneath her disappear and an intense searing pain shooting through her scalp. With on smooth motion, Isabelle had hoisted her to her feet and performed a powerful judo throw with both hands grasped tightly on her hair. April went sailing over her shoulder and gasped in pain as she went crashing down onto Texas's desk, the impact nearly making it collapse beneath her.

It wasn't often that April got to fight someone her own size. Gold Springs was a town filled with lumbering brutes and more often than not she and Texas would find themselves having to think on their feet as they grappled with literal giants. Isabelle was a lot tougher than her dainty appearance suggested and between the two she might've been the better combatant, but compared to the likes of Roxxie or Georgia, this was nothing. April looked up at her opponent with a smug grin as she shot her arms up and latched onto the back of Isabelle's neck. Isabelle blinked in surprise, clearly not having expected the fox to still have any fight in her. April's knee collided with the top of her head with great ****, causing the sheep to fall back onto the ground in a slight daze.

"Come on, princess" April growled as she slid off of the desk and back onto her feet. Her intense and focused gaze left Isabelle feeling uneasy again. "We're not done. Pick your sorry ass up and let's go"

Isabelle scooted back nervously as April began stalking up to her. Nothing had changed between them. She still had a physical edge over her foe yet April's durability made her begin to doubt whether or not she would come out on top. Tough as Isabelle was, her primary skills were in manipulation and seduction. She didn't quite have the mental toughness that made people like Texas and April so formidable. As Isabelle continued to retreat from the encroaching deputy, she felt her hand brush along something small and metallic. She looked down and saw that her hand was resting on the derringer that she had intended to kill Joe with. Her confidence returned in an instant as she grabbed onto it and leapt to her feet.

April froze in place as she suddenly found herself staring down the barrel of a gun. There was no fear in her expression but she knew better than to try any sudden movements.

"Not very sporting of you" April muttered.

"I'm a killer for hire, sugar" Isabelle said as she looked at Isabelle with a haughty smile. "I have to admit, you put up a good fight... but now the game's over. Once I put you down, I can head back west with my future bride~"

April's brow furrowed as Isabelle gave her own bosom as an affectionate pat. She recalled how Isabelle had claimed ownership of Texas and the venom laced insults that the sheep tossed her way. It wasn't too difficult for her to put two and two together as she realized that this lunatic had somehow flattened her boss in such a way that she could easily be stored away and smuggled out of town with everyone being none the wiser. It was clear to her that this woman was one of the five contracted mercenaries who were out for Texas. What she didn't get was why she seemed so dead set on whisking the sheriff away with her.

"So you and Texas are getting hitched?" April asked curiously.

"That's right. We're going to spend the rest of our lives together, happy and in love~" Isabelle cooed as she placed a hand on her blushing cheek. April took note of how the sheep glanced away from her while gushing over her imagined future and a plan quickly formulated in her mind.

"So are you gonna take on her last name or is it the other way around?"

"Hmm... I hadn't considered that..." Isabelle muttered as she placed a hand on her chin. "I take a great deal of pride in my family name... then again, Maryanne Isabelle Stanton just rolls of the tongue sooo well~" She giggled. "Yes, I think that would be best. An ideal housewife is subservient to her partner, so it's only fitting"

"Fair enough, I suppose" April said as she slowly eased her way behind the desk, taking care not to make any noises that would draw the sheep's attention. "If you're going to be a housewife, then what's Texas gonna be doing? She's gonna be the breadwinner, right?"

"Of course! I would expect nothing less from my sweet, perfect, beautiful wife~" Isabelle swooned as closed her eyes she hugged her arms together. "After a long day's work toiling in the fields, she'll come in all sweaty and musky and I'll be there with her dinner prepared and ready..."

"Ooh, then what happens?" April asked with as much interest as she could manage. While Isabelle indulged in her fantasies, she had picked up the chair behind the desk and started making her way back to towards the sheep.

"Then, after we've eaten dinner, we'll take a nice hot bath together and then after that, we'll head in our boudoir where I'll tend to her tired body with a full body message. Then, once she's nice and relaxed, we'll get into our warm and toasty bed and kiss and cuddle and-"

*SMASH!!*

Isabelle was roughly snapped from her fantasy as April brought the chair down on her head in full ****, shattering it over her skull. The sheep's slowly blinked as she looked up at April, anger flashing on her face for a brief moment before her eyes rolled in the back of her head as she fell to the ground ****. April took in a deep breath, her body starting to ache once the adrenaline wore off. She staggered over to the prone sheep and blushed as she looked down at cleavage. She looked away in embarrassment as she knelt down and shoved her hand deep between her breasts. She felt around for a bit before her hand landed on what felt like a damp washcloth.

"Hold on, Texas!" She said as she began to pull her boss free. The constant sweat and friction had left the sheriff plastered to Isabelle's boobs, making it harder to free her. With a few good tugs, she managed to finally peel Texas's flattened body free. Her boss looked less like a weasel and more like a bath towel with googly eyes, though it was far from the worst thing that could've happened to her. She whipped the sheriff's body a few times before wringing the sweat off of her and gingerly laying her out onto the desk. She turned her attention back at Isabelle and she went to work dragging her over to the cell.

Three hours passed by before Isabelle finally began to stir with a pained groan. She held onto her throbbing head as she slowly sat up to survey her environment. She was sitting on a cold concrete floor with thick iron bars in front of her. Beyond them, she could see the sheriff's office, though the deputy was no where to be seen.

"Oh, you're finally up! I was starting to think that you had cashed in your chips!"

The sheep blinked and looked behind to find Jolly Joe sitting in the corner wearing his usual toothy grin. His presence confused her. How did he get free from the holding cell? Had he somehow slipped out during the fight? Seeing the confusion on her face, Joe felt obliged to provide answers.

"That deputy cleaned your clock, love. You been out for a few hours now" he said with a sympathetic smile.

Isabelle stared at him wordlessly before closing her eyes and taking in a deep breath through her nose. She had never failed in her many years spent as an assassin, so she wasn't exactly sure how she was supposed to feel. Before she could reflect on this new development, she heard footsteps coming from upstairs. A bandaged covered April stepped into the room with Texas following from behind. Texas had managed to successful reshape herself back to her normal form and had placed her outfit back on. They stopped in front of the cell, the sheriff looking down at Isabelle with a scrutinizing gaze.

"Isabelle Cynthia Lockhart, commonly known the Black Sheep of the Lockhart Clan. You got quite the track record on ya. Fifty marriages, all ending in the disappearance of the spouse. Business moguls, oil barons, landowners, and much much more. Coincidently, all of em just so happened to leave everything in your name. Funny how that works"

Isabelle said nothing as she was dressed down, though a sheepish smirk began to form at the corner of her mouth. She opened her eyes to meet the weasel's gaze. There was no point in keeping up her innocent act any more, her truth self showing as the shadows returned beneath her eyes. Still, there was a small glimmer of softness behind those dull eyes as her smile widened ever so slightly.

"For what it's worth... I meant everything I said" she said with a chuckle.

Texas felt the heat begin to rise in her face and quickly turned away. She had been suckered in before and it almost costed her her and April's lives. She wouldn't fall for the sheep's honeyed words a second time. Isabelle giggled at her bashfulness before looking over at April who didn't look all too pleased to see her up and about. Crazed as she was, the sultry sheep was also a professional. The deputy beat her fair and square, so it was only right that she pay her respects. April raised a brow as her former foe curtseyed at her.

"You are the better woman, Miss April. Congratulations on your victory"

"Yeah... sure" the fox muttered as she stepped away from the cell. Her body still ached from the beating she took in dealing with the sheep so she wasn't in the mood to humor her attempts at flattery. She and Texas stepped away from the cell and walked outside the office. After everything they'd gone through, a trip to the bar was in order.

Another mercenary down! Who comes for them next?
