What's next?
A defensive breakfast.
Walking into the kitchen you find all the women staring at you angrily with their hands on their hips.
"Uh oh" you whisper to yourself.
"We'll just see what he has to say first, we shouldn't assume he is the reason" Annabel says to the others and then looks at you expectantly.
"Um...hello everyone. Something is going on clearly" you address the group.
"John do you know why Dawn started crying for no reason while we were talking with her, and then abruptly faded away without telling us why" Annabel asks you.
"She won't respond to us either" Nadine states.
"Ahh, I see what is going on then. I promise it is nothing bad, quite the opposite really. I will explain" you reply. The entire group wave their hand in the same manner suggesting for you to quickly explain. You smirk at the unprompted synchronization of the group.
"Dawn and I had a, um...fun morning, and as we were laying there talking we both discovered some things about each other. As it turns out Dawn has two spells that limit her. One limits her to just one physical presence, and the other limits her in her human form to this facility. Meaning she can only leave through the use of that robot T-rex in the main chamber. That is something Dawn has significant reservations about as it cuts her off from the facility to possess the T-rex. That is a unpleasant feeling for her, and if that T-rex is destroyed so would she be" you begin explaining. You can see Nadine, and surprisingly Yvette, starting to understand, the remaining women don't seem to understand though. You continue.
"In order for those spells to be removed, and correct me if I'm wrong here Nadine, you would need the original person who cast the spells to remove them" you continue explaining.
"It would be unlikely for even the original caster to be able to remove their own spell. It would take a very long time for a mage like me to even see how the spell is attached, and much much longer for me to figure out how to remove a spell I have cast. I really only know how spells are attached in theory. I've never actually attempted it" Nadine interjects.
"Right, and irrelevant too as the original mage is long gone, but the other option is to have an intuitive mage remove the spells, and I'm an intuitive mage" you finish explaining.
"I don't remember what that is" Jane states.
"Um, well basically, and again correct me if I am wrong Nadine, but an intuitive mage can either see a spell being cast, or see a spell that is applied to something, and copy that spell exactly. Allowing them fairly unlimited potential for learning spells" you explain.
"It is a lot quicker as well. A lot quicker" Nadine adds.
"Right, I don't have to study and practice the spell basically. In the context of removing a spell the best way I can describe it is...um...hmmm. I'll just explain what I did with the map Nadine gave me to find her. When I examined her spell it was attached to the map with what I can only describe as tendrils. First I tried just pushing the tendrils back into the spell, but the moment my focus moved to the next tendril the tendril I'd pushed back in immediately regrew itself and reattached. No matter what I tried I couldn't maintain focus on keeping that tendril pushed back into the spell, while also attempting to push in another tendril" you state.
"To get around that I wondered what would happen if I placed a copy of the spell in the exact same spot. What I discovered is that I could maintain the copy spell, and when I pushed in a tendril of the original spell back into the spell, the copy spell could have it's own tendril grow into that exact spot. Then when I focused on the next tendril of the original spell it couldn't regrow its own tendril again because there was already something there. I just repeated the process for each tendril until they were all replaced. When I released my focus the original spell vanished and all that remained was my copy spell" you finished.
"Then from there he could remove his own spell, which left no spell on the map I had given him. It was a truly remarkable feat, especially for someone so new to magic" Nadine added.
"How can you remove your own spell. Wouldn't the, um, tendril thing, regrow again once you focused on the next one" Annabel asks.
"Hmmm...I hadn't thought of that. The tendril doesn't regrow on my own spell for some reason" you say shrugging your shoulders.
"As a mage it is his magic he is attaching to the object, as such, when he pushes a tendril back in that is now how his spell...um...is shaped" Nadine explains "if he concentrates long enough on attaching the spell he could place dozens of these tendrils in place, or alternatively he could attach it with just one tendril. However, if he used less than two tendrils some of the more advanced mages could likely remove his spell since they'd only have to push one tendril back into the spell" she finishes.
"That kind of makes me wonder. If you can't see or shape the tendrils on a spell how do your spells attach themselves" you ask Nadine.
"That's actually one of the ways of determining how powerful a mage is, or at least an indicator. Typically the more magic a mage can push into their spell the more tendrils will grow. However, that isn't always the case so it should never be the only thing to look at. For a mage like me who isn't intuitive and can't custom shape my spells, they will have an automatic number of tendrils that will attach. Some of that is due to the spell the mage learned combined with how much magic I can push into the spell as well. My main ability doesn't deal with attaching spells to anything so my spells are fairly, um, weak in that regard, but really I don't have much of a reason to. With the exception of John here, I am unaware of anyone else who would be able to remove my spells. Depending on the mage the number of tendrils their spells create will vary, with more powerful mages usually having more tendrils" she explains.
"That will be my issue then won't it. If the person who cast Dawn's spells was powerful, and I'm assuming they were, there might be enough tendrils to make it impossible for me to remove the spells" you say a little sadly.
"Well, I might be able to help, and I think Dawn can as well maybe. Groups of mages can combine their focus into one thing, and that will help you, but even then it will still depend on the number of tendrils on the spell. We won't be able to maintain that focus together for forever. Eventually Dawn or myself will collapse from over exertion, and that isn't fun to recover from let me tell you. We won't know until you try though" Nadine states.
"And regardless of if you succeed or not, being willing to try is more than I ever thought possible" Dawn says phasing into existence to hug you from behind. "Sorry everyone, I just needed a moment to process everything" she says over your shoulder.
"It's ok, we had your back. We're all family so we were just concerned is all" Yvette responds with a chuckle.
"I think we also owe John an apology as well" Annabel chimes in "We have only ever known John to be a kind man, and we assumed he'd done something to Dawn without knowing anything" she adds.
"Nope nope nope, don't apologize. I think we all know I'm capable of doing stupid things. We're a family, and I need all of you to help keep me from being overly stupid, and keeping me grounded. You'll never have to apologize for wanting to make sure I wasn't being stupid, or being too much of an asshole. I am happy you all have each other's back, and seeing you all get along with each other makes me really happy" you reply.
"We appreciate that, but I think we shouldn't have jumped to thinking the worst immediately. You can trust we won't you do stupid stuff though" Yvette says.
"We all love you" Rene states. You notice everyone nodding, even Nadine, and you can't help but smile.
"Let's eat some breakfast everyone, we have a long day of training ahead of us afterall" you tell the group. The group all raise a single eyebrow.
"Sorry, I love you all too" you say sincerely. Dawn gives your neck a kiss and lets you go to go walk towards the stove. You all sit down together to chat for a while.
How's training go?
