Walter shows his invention to the headmaster

Walter had an issue with the kids he was teaching. None of the high school seniors seemed to take him serious.

That is why he decided that extraordinary situations required extraordinary measures. The later clearly indicating using the iBod so that their heads would raise during class.

But of course, first he would need to make sure the principal was okay with his plan. Sure, using the iBod in class was... unorthodox, but it would've put the students, particularly those students, in their place. Always ignoring the lectures, skipping class... Walter had a plan.

Although if Mr. Miller didn't accept his radical plan, the days of being the school's metaphorical punching bag were to continue...

And so he decided to go to the principal's office.
