It’s Kayla. She’s right there on the list that Lisa sends you, which you have to squint at as you sit on your bed in the cabin because looking at spreadsheets on a phone sucks and you are bad at it. You weren’t wrong. Her hire date is a month ago. You don’t talk to her or text her very often, but you’ve spoken to her several times while she must’ve been here at FUTA, working. She acted like she was back home in Gurlberg. What the hell is she up to? Of all the places she could work, here? And keeping it a secret? She must have a reason. She’s supposed to be getting ready for college in the fall, which is only weeks away. FUTA’s first season is nearing its end.

Baffled, you chew on your straw at lunch with your team until Lara hits you with her elbow way harder than she needs to.

“What’s wrong?” she asks, wiping her mouth with a napkin in a weirdly bougie way.

“Nothing,” you tell her. People knowing that your sister is working here will not do you any favors.

It’s just so weird. It’s making you edgy.

Why can’t Lisa be like Max? Max is sweet and cute, and being in a room with her calms you instead of making your blood pressure go up.
