Chapter 10

How do you wake up this time?
Horizontal
This time you wake up in much the same shape, only lying on your back. Your head hurts a little less, but you know better than to check now. You notice shortly that you're rocking front to back, like you're on a boat. The sound of the waves next makes it clear your guess was correct.
You look down and notice two plastic hoses going into the arms of the jacket. You look around some more and take inventory of your surroundings.
You're in a room with metal walls. It's bare otherwise, a single door, and a stool in the corner. You try to call for help, and eventually it works. A young girl, probably in her mid twenties dressed in rough work clothes enters. "Oh hey you're up!" She sits down, all too calmly, very obviously this isn't her first time seeing someone like this. "Welcome aboard matey!" she says in a mock pirate accent. "Don't worry, it's only a few short hours till we get to land again."
You're panicking, but her cool calm demeanor makes you keep it under control, there's something soothing about her. You look down at the hoses. "Oh those?" she asks "Yeah by the time your type get here it's usually been a day or two since they had food or drink, and we obviously can't ungag you just yet." What did she mean obviously? "So that's some lactated ringers, keep you hydrated and healthy."
"My name is May, I'm here to watch over you until we get to San Alegria. It'll be a short ride so you can get some sleep." You whine into your gag, too terrified to sleep. "Oh poor thing, here." She pulls her stool over to your head and starts running her long nails through your hair. "Shhh shhh" she hums a little lullaby, and you actually drift off into a natural sleep for the first time in days.
* * *
"Hey there pet, we're here. Wake up." You hear through groggy darkness. Then you let out a little laugh, feeling feather light tickles up and down your neck. "We officially landed. Welcome to San Alegria!" You open your eyes and look up at May's smiling face. But something about it seems a little off. Her eyes just a little too wide.
"So now we can remove this." She holds up a small key, and gently reaches behind the back of your head. You hear a metallic click, then feel the ball in your mouth coming loose. She pulls it out and sets it aside gently and pats your hair. "There is that better?" she says sweetly.
You stretch your jaw a little, getting feeling back. It's sore from not being able to close for almost 2 days. You work your tongue around, letting it feel your teeth again for the first time in a while. You try to make a noise but just cough, you're not used to talking again yet. "Easy easy, you've had it rough." She pulls over a glass of water and slowly lowers it to your lips. "Here have a sip and try again." You greedily gulp down the cabin temperature water, glad to have it. You cough for a fit, and eventually get a hold of yourself.
"Where am I?" is the first thing you think to ask.
"I already told you silly, San Alegria, your new home!" she answers cheerfully.
"What do you mean?"
"Well we landed, and once all the moors are set we're taking you off and to the facility which will be your new home!"
"But I already have one." You say, trying to politely let her know you have no interest in staying.
"Oh don't worry about that, this is your new one."
"But I'd really rather go to my old one." You say sensing that something is not quite right here.
"Oh that's not happening silly, it's too late for that." She says, that same vacant smile staring back at you.
"What do you mean?"
"We're on sovereign San Alegria land now. You had your chance to leave, all you had to do was say so while you were still on American soil. But now you're subject to the law of San Alegria, which is it's own sovereign nation, owned by the Reformatory." She smiles, but that vacancy in her eyes suddenly appears much more sinister.
"But I didn't-"
"It doesn't matter." She cuts you off. "You belong here now. Now that we've landed you're property." You can almost seem flames burning in her pupils. "You're not even a pet. You're a thing." Her words fill you with terror. "Our legal team is busy on the main land erasing your identity. Luckily you weren't too popular. Single, few friends outside the internet, no family you're on talking terms with." How did she know? "Only the most ripe candidates make it here. Soon you'll be just another missing persons case, then 48 hours later, you'll be a cold case." You can almost make out a black aura, pure evil licking off her in black flames. The pure oppressiveness of her words causing you to hallucinate. "So worm. Are you excited?" She expects an answer.
How do you answer?
