Chapter 4

What's next?

Janice's husband invites Lacy out

"Well, gosh, I'm feeling a little peckish. You want to get something to eat, kemosabe?" asked Janice's husband. He had a dopey, dumb smile, and there wasn't a thing hidden in it.

It was the least threatening proposal Lacy had ever received at a shoot. She had always liked Mr. Evers. He was a nice little man. Very devoted to his wife. The perfect man for The Christian Woman’s Bridal Magazine's founder.

"That sounds like a blast, Mr. Evers. What were you thinking?" Lacy said.

"Heck, you don't need to call me that! Just call me Hank. I know a mighty fine bee-bee-cue restaurant not far from here. How does that sound to you?"

Most of the time, Lacy wasn't much for meat. After a long day in front of the hot lights, she needed some protein. "Sounds like a great idea to me, Mr. Evers. Hank!"

"Right-e-oh," said Hank. "I'll just let Jenny know that we're heading on out." Lacy was almost surprised that Janice was comfortable with her husband going out alone with an attractive young woman. That was the kind of trust a married couple of more than two decades could have, she figured.

Hank stepped into Janice's editing room for just a moment, but it was enough to upset her. "Gosh darn it, Hank!" she snapped. "The prints are gonna get all messed up, close the door!"

Hank stepped right back out again with a fake plastic smile all over his face. "Alrighty then, let's head out!"
