Janice's husband admits their marital troubles

They made it all the way to the restaurant and to their table before the cracks in Hank's facade started to show. When Lacy had asked about how Janice had talked to him back at the studio, he had brushed her off. "Oh, that's my Janice! Always so focused on her work." He tried to make it look like he admired that about her. He didn't do a very good job. And by the time he had a glass of water in his hand, it was shaking badly.

"Mr. Evers," said Lacy, trying to sound gentle.

He smiled again. It still didn't look like he meant it. "Hey-oh, remember, I said to call me Hank!"

She tried to sound even softer. "It's okay. We can talk about it if you want."

Hank sighed. "You don't gotta worry about it, sugar. It's just hard being married sometimes. Janice is so busy. Busy, and..." There was a tear forming in his eye. Lacy was shocked to see it. Hank had always seemed nonthreatening, but a good old Southern boy like him didn't seem like the sort to cry in public. She must have hit a very serious nerve without noticing it. Hank sniffed and blinked his eyes shut tight so that the tear disappeared, but it didn't mean that Lacy had forgotten about it. "So, what're you having for dinner?" he asked as he hid his face behind the menu.

"Mr. Evers, we can go somewhere more private to talk about it," Lacy suggested.

Hank froze. "No, we ain't gotta... aw, heck. Maybe we should talk about it. Where you thinkin' we go?"
