Is Lukas’s gut right?
He's right... But the fighting is still intense.
The chase is brief, and the fighting is violent. It’s different from Graeber's engagements while he was in France, Yugoslavia, and Greece. There while malice– a vicious intent to kill the other opponent. There is no mutual respect or sympathy for one another: only hate and the desire to kill. While they crash and skirmish in the forest, Graeber knows he would not hesitate to stab or strangle any of his aggressors. He wouldn’t realize the burning animosity he was coursing in his system until they came across the warehouse. It’s rapidly surrounded and made into a shoot house. Somehow, a fire starts inside, making the fighting easier on the German end…
…Black smoke billows from a warehouse as the fire inside scorches everything. There are five bodies outside in a pool of crimson without uniforms. Above the bodies are Germans from different units.
Behind them, where the forest is still thick, are dead comrades and a few more partisans. “Fuck this,” Lukas says. “What a waste of time.”
“If it wasn’t us, then it was the next.”
“This isn’t…” Lukas trails off.
Graeber follows his friend's gaze and sees the others from the train dragging someone out of a hole. A woman, he knows this by the sound she’s making. She’s cursing and flailing like a spoiled toddler.
“Just shoot her already!” Someone shouts.
“Kill her!” Another says.
“Take her by rank!” Someone else suggests.
“What do you mean by that?” Graeber tries to find the face that says it, but in the group of 20+ soldiers, no one steps up.
“We should go,” Lukas whispers, not liking the mood in the air now.
The soldiers dragging the woman drop her in a circle of soldiers. Graeber watched, unsure what the intentions were at first. He asks for a Hauptmann or a Feldwebel, but none are in the group. Perhaps they’re dead in the forest. The girl starts crying, but neither Lukas nor Graeber move to help her. Finally, the other soldiers start undressing her, and Lukas stands up.
“Let’s go,” he says urgently. “We can’t do anything.”
