Chapter 5 by Felixfalck Felixfalck

How goes the rest of the evening?

Uneventful

The rest of the evening, if one could even call it that at this time of night was rather quiet. Minh reheated some curry and ate in near perfect silence. Her husband held her company but conversation was sparse. The distance between the two was painfully obvious at this point. Their small exchanges were comparable to two strangers talking about mundane things whilst stuck in an elevator. When her plate was nearly finished Clark made a proposal which Minh usually would shut down immediately. Given the unfortunate circumstances of the celebratory meal he suggested they go out to an actual restaurant after work for a proper date.
Whenever he'd come up with similar ideas involving Minh's commitment to the relationship over her work she'd decline. This time however she found it quite reasonable and agreed to his proposed date. Was this a consequence of the app, she wondered. No matter how hard she tried she could come up with no reasons to decline. Fortunately the request was rather benign, hopefully this was as agreeable as she'd get. "I could do with a little agreeableness if it means patching up things with Clark" she reasoned. With a satisfied hunger and conscience she got up and brought her plate and cutlery to the dishwasher.

Heading towards the kitchen counter Minh did a double take over her shoulder towards Clark. She expected a slightly giddy smile from him, having finally managed to convince her to go out on an actual date for the first time in years. What she saw however was more of a "business like usual" type of expression. If Clark couldn't notice her obviously altered appearance it made sense that he'd be equally ignorant to her increase in agreeableness too. This could get dangerous fast. As she put away the dishes a sense of anxiety slowly built in her chest. "What if I become someone completely unrecognizable? To everyone else but me it'll be completely natural. Hell, I don't even know what kind of relationship I've got with Clark anymore! Is this our first date in years? With me like this I might as well have been going out every week!"

The spiraling thoughts continued all the way into her and Clark's shared bedroom. Without giving it a second thought Minh laid down on her side of the bed. Which at the time felt completely natural. It wasn't until she was joined by her husband that she realized just how wrong the whole situation was. Before her her encounter with the website they'd slept in their own beds, in separate bedrooms even! In this reality or whatever one would call it their relationship wasn't THAT far gone.

Minh's train of thought was abruptly interrupted by advances from Clark. He was clearly in the mood and wanted her. As far as she was concerned they hadn't had intercourse in half a year or so. He might remember that differently however, for all she knew they'd had sex last week. With all of the shit currently going on Minh couldn't be less interested in sex and turned her back towards Clark, clearly signaling that he wasn't getting anything tonight.
"At least I can still say no to sex" she thought relatively satisfied as she slowly drifted off to sleep.

The following morning she was awakened, not by her usual alarm but an aggressive notification from her phone. It was the newly installed app demanding her immediate attention. Recalling how the app had previously mentioned that daily input was required she figured it was best to play along for now. Having random options selected for her could prove detrimental.

"It's the second day of your new life! Please select up to two non-overlapping traits from each of the subjects. All options are based off of your initial preferred options".

"Preferred options" was a bit of a stretch Minh thought to herself. It's not like she had a choice in the first place. Immediately following the short announcement she glanced at todays options.

David Chestnut:
Style
Intelligence
Agreeableness
Class
Dung Phan:
Style
BM
Class
Language

Some differing options from both options which Minh were less than satisfied with. On one hand, she didn't want her dad's style. He was one for wearing socks in his sandals and just being a bog standard middle aged man in terms of style his whole life. No thank you. That left her with intelligence, agreeableness and class. Note of which were among her fathers "good" qualities. On the other hand she still knew nothing of her grandmother, which made picking from her a minefield. The biggest unknown was however the "BM" option. What did that mean? Should she risk picking an unknown option from her already mysterious grandmother?

She picks..
