What's next?

they get their car from the hotel valet

Abbie and Jake finished dressing and waited for the elevator to go down to the lobby. On the way, Abbie seemed to get a little nervous.

"What's going on?" asked Jake. "Your body language, your walk -- something is up."

"Well," began Abbie, "I guess it's not a big deal, but one of those guys from the party last night, I think he's a valet."

"The one with the ..."

Abbie laughed and smacked Jake playfully on the arm. "Yeah, the one with the."

"I knew it. You wouldn't have said 'one of those guys' if it was one of the other two. You'd have been more specific."

The elevator door opened and they boarded the car. Abbie giggled. "You're probably right." Then she grabbed Jake's wrist. "It's just that it's like this big!"

Jake sighed.

"Oh stop. Who's here with me now?"

Jake nodded. "I'm here."

"Yeah, but holy crap it was big." Abbie was doing more to tease Jake than anything else. After their talk upstairs, she felt more confident with him. Is it too risky teasing him about this? I don't want him to worry about things. "Can I be honest?"

"Please, as long as it isn't more about the valet."

"Well it is. But, and maybe you don't know this, since you're not a girl," she started.

Jake gasped. "I'm not?!"

Abbie smacked him again. "That guy being big, I mean, it really doesn't matter. He couldn't smile. He couldn't tease. He couldn't even hold a conversation."

"No?" Jake said with a grin, starting to see Abbie's point.

"No. He had one interesting quality for part of an evening. I mean, look at me. I'm nervous that he might be at the valet desk. It's because, what would I say to him? 'Hey, fun having sex with you, this is awkward, bye now'?"

"Yeah, I guess I hadn't thought of it that way." The elevator stopped at the lobby. They got out and headed through the main foyer toward the front door.

"Did you ever have a one-night stand and then run into them the next day or the next week or something?"

Jake thought about it. "Yeah, probably. In college, maybe."

"Super weird, right?"

"Super weird."

"What should we do if we see him?"

Jake looked at Abbie. "You're asking me? I'd pretend I don't know him. And I don't."

Abbie nodded. "Okay. You be in charge. Maybe I'll just stand further away. With my sunglasses on. Very mysterious."

They walked out the front doors. Jake went to the valet counter, and was confident that the guy working there wasn't the man from the night before. He gave over his ticket and then walked back to Abbie.

"I don't think that's him."

"It's not."

"Then we're lucky."

She smiled at him. "Super lucky."

A few moments later, Jake's rented convertible made its way to the curb. Jake tipped the driver, opened the door for Abbie, and then walked around and got in on his side. They buckled in, and began to drive away from the hotel.
