The Boxing Match Gets Under Way
Pacifica stood in front of her excited dad, getting ready to start a sparring match with her old man. She had on a black tank top and a pair of black athletic shorts, not changing from the clothes she had on all day. Her attire matched her black boxing gloves, her black lipstick, and even her black painted toes as she stood barefoot in their living room.
"Ok. Are you ready to start honey?"
"Sure whatever," she answered sounding and looking disinterested in this entire activity as she slowly moved her hands from her hips to the starting defensive position she half remembered from her dad's lessons at the start of the week. She wanted this to be over as soon as possible, and displaying disinterest was a good way to go about it.
"Better move your hands a bit more up, otherwise I'm going to have easy access to that face of yours," her dad said, getting into position himself. She adjusted her position slightly, still keeping her hands below where they should be as to show her dad that she didn't exactly know what she should do.
Her dad smirked at her adjustment. "Not exactly, but you'll learn in time!" He had expected her to change her mind about the sport when she actually tried it. He always knew she was feisty and a handful to deal with, and he thought boxing would be a good way for her to release some of that energy and aggression in a productive manner. He probably didn't expect however what was about to happen. At least he was right about her falling in love with boxing after tonight, although not in the way he thought.
"Sure will," she said sarcastically while giggling slightly. Regardless of how stupid she thought this was, she appreciated her dad trying to get her to get into something that she could make hers. She was content to just chill and go with the flow for the last few weeks of highschool, but she had to admit that her dad's dorky enthusiasm was kinda charming while it lasted.
The plan was simple. Show disinterest in the sport, but do well enough to show that she tried. She would get a couple good shots in, but fail at putting up any defense. She knew her dad would take it easy on her, so she felt safe ignoring the defense aspect of the fight and just showing that she lacks the reflexes and skill for this sport. She would make her dad happy that she partook in one of his ideas and let him spend some quality time with her, neither of them would get hurt, and she could go back to being a goth teenager finishing up her last days of school hanging out with her friends and not really caring about much. Easy plan, right?
It would have been, was it not for the loaded gloves. Usually cheating boxers would load their gloves with just the right amount of weight to make their punches land harder without making it obvious to anyone that they were cheating. And since they were pros at the sport, they knew exactly how much weight they could get away with. Pacifica, however, did not possess that sort of expertise, and in her lack of knowledge of the sport, had overloaded her gloves.
"Ready or not, here I come!" Her dad moved towards her with his arms in guard. It was almost a comical sight, a 5'11 155 pound 42 year old, fighting a 5'2 115 pound 18 year old girl. The mismatch didn't seem to bother Pacifica though, as she rushed into the fight, slower than her old man did.
It started as expected. The dad taking control and delivering a few punches to his daughter's midsection and arms, while she missed every one of her punches, which would have been expected considering how slow they were as a result of the heavy weights attached to them. After a couple minutes Pacifica was noticeably tiring while her dad was moving around fresh as ever.
"Come on sweetie, where's all that practice? Don't tell me you were slacking off instead of preparing," he said with a hint of irony. Even though it was the truth, it still made her face contort into an angry stare. She moved in for a one too punch, but was once again too slow as she watched her dad evade her attacks with grace.
"Good one, but you're still sloppy with the execution. But don't worry, a few more lessons with me and you're going to be a boxing champion." Pacifica could not believe this! It had been pretty much an entire round so far, if anyone had kept track of the time. She had yet to land a single punch, and had barely blocked any of her dad's, clearly being pummeled for the entire duration of this boxing match, and yet, her father still wanted her to go through with this??
She was getting even angrier now, launching once again with a flurry of punches. And as usual her dad ducked and weaved out of the way of all of them, refusing to let his daughter get a look in.
"nuh uh," he said as he was walking away from his exhausted daughter. "Use your brain, not your fists!" She had had enough. Looking up at her dad, she had a new fire in her eyes. Her plan had changed. It was no longer about holding her own and losing, she wanted to beat the shit out of her father. And She was going to use his own advice to do it. A smirk showed up on her face as she formulated her master plan.
How Does Pacifica Use Her Brain?
