Chapter 45 by zankoo zankoo

What's next?

Abbie and Jake meet another couple as dinner ends

"Does anyone here know Staci Reynolds?" a woman's voice yelled.

Abbie and Jake turned their heads to the entrance of the restaurant when they heard this strange shout. Abbie said, "Isn't Staci the bride?"

Jake nodded. "Yup. This is weird."

Most of the patrons of the restaurant were looking at the entrance now, curious about this odd disruption. After a moment, a woman appeared, and said again, "Does anyone here know Staci Reynolds?" The woman was a little taller than average, had blonde hair stylized in an updo, and wore flattering red dress and red heels to match. She was shortly followed by a man who looked embarrassed, as he quietly apologized to just about everyone they walked past. The man wore a dark suit, a pale yellow shirt, a blue patterned tie, and dark-rimmed glasses.

"We know Staci Reynolds, don't we?" said Abbie. "I mean, you do."

Jake looked at her. "Yeah, but I don't know if I want to get mixed up in whatever this is."

But it was too late. Abbie put her hand in the air and said, "I know her!"

The couple that had just entered the restaurant turned toward Abbie and walked to the table. The woman spoke. "You know Staci?"

Abbie gestured to Jake. "He's her cousin. What is it, Jake -- third cousin?"

Jake looked up at the blonde woman. "Right. I'm Staci's third cousin."

The woman smacked her date on the arm. "I win." She looked at Abbie and Jake. "I win! I made Chris a bet here that we could walk into just about any place in this hotel, and someone would know Staci."

"I'm not sure it was a real bet," said the man, still embarrassed by the whole scene. "I don't remember wagering anything or even doubting that you were right." He looked at Jake. "I'm Chris Caulfield. I work with Phil -- Staci's fiancé. This is my wife, Michelle."

Abbie and Jake both pushed their chairs back to stand. Abbie reached out a hand to greet the new couple. "It's great to meet you. I'm Abbie Andrews, I'm here with Jake." She shook hands with each of them. She was looking at Jake, and didn't notice that Chris was rather taken by her outfit.

"Nice to meet you, too."

"Jake Lewis," Jake said as he stood. And the moment he stood, he realized that although he had successfully redressed himself below the table, his still had a very prominent hardon in his pants from all the footplay earlier. He tried to hold his napkin in front of him to mask it, but it only drew attention -- from both Abbie and Michelle.

Michelle looked up and down at him. "Hi Jake, I'm Michelle Caulfield. Pleasure." She gave a furtive glance to Abbie, as if to say do you know your boyfriend has something going on in his pants? -- but Abbie didn't really read the moment, and just smiled back at Michelle.

Michelle extended her right hand to Jake, and as he took it, she stepped closer to him. Her left hand dangled at her side, and she made a small effort to casually brush it forward against Jake's body. The back of her hand managed to graze the front of his pants. He felt it, and he was sure she felt it. He snapped a look at Abbie, who seemed unaware of what was going on.

Abbie turned back to Michelle. "Michelle, you're the big winner -- you found someone who knows Staci. What did you win?"

"That's right, Abbie." Michelle turned to Chris. "What did I win, Chris?" She was still holding Jake's hand, making him feel even more awkward.

Chris sighed. "How about I buy you a cocktail. If I know you, you'll look at the menu, choose the most expensive one, and then barely touch it." Abbie giggled at the description.

"He's right, you know," Michelle said to Jake in faux secrecy. She squeezed his hand, and then released it. Finally, to Chris, she added, "Let's go."

Chris looked back at Jake and Abbie. "If you think you can tolerate another minute with us, you're welcome to come up to the bar once you've finished eating." He ushered Michelle ahead of him toward the bar. "Nice to meet you both."

Abbie and Jake both nodded goodbyes and sat down again.
