The Acquiescence of Lust and Desire
Desire knew that her twin sister, without a word from her, would very quickly lose herself to her rage. Lust was all about control. Gaining control over what she wanted and how she wanted it had long been her trademark. Many mortals confused the two, not understanding the nuance. Desire was an embrace, Lust was a death grip.
“Sister,” Desire spoke, exhaling smoke with her word, “there is no other choice.”
“He is a mere mortal! His place is so far below us that…”
“No,” she cut Lust off, “not anymore. Father had decreed. It’s the only way.”
Lust’s face turned red, but she closed her eyes and took deep breaths. Desire’s words had gotten through to her, and she was beginning to calm herself. Good. This would avoid catastrophe, which could only lead to a visit from their older sister, Despair. At least with Justice involved, their servitude would come with a new natural order. That would ease the sense of loss somewhat.
“We will not dispute the trade,” Lust’s voice has the sound of resignation. She knew there was no way around it. Had the mortal relented and given them the power, all would have been well. But since Justice knew of their Father’s wishes, their course has been set. And if a binding trade was the only way for the mortal to allow them to perform their duties, then a trade must be done.
“Alright!” Justice clapped her cracked and dry hands gleefully, “Let’s do this! Tim, my boy, we know what you can give, but is there anything you want to take?”
