Power Girl on Duty

Kara Zor-L sat at the console in the orbiting satellite that the Justice League called The Watchtower. It wasn't often that she had monitor duty, not because it wasn't asked of her, but because she was usually far too busy to spend a day sitting at a desk. That day, though, the usual heroes she could offload a shift too, folks like Blue Jay or Vibe, all couldn’t make it, leaving the heavy hitter watching the desk.

On most days, nothing happened that required the League to activate. Yes, there were wars, and there was hunger, but having the Justice League wade into geopolitical affairs usually went poorly. But natural disasters, aliens, supervillain attacks, that’s what Kara would watch for. And while she could, as Power Girl, take care of most things very quickly, her monitor role was to triage the issue, then assign it to the right hero.

Kara was thankful for the Justice League. It had been years since she had ended up in this new reality, a Kryptonian from an alternative universe, and when she had first come she had felt so alone. Yes, her ‘cousin’ had tried to make her feel at home, but she needed a family. The League had become that family. Among them she was accepted the way she was, valued.

The display in front of her indicated an incoming message. Kara pressed the button to open the channel.

“Watchtower, it’s Wonder Woman,” a familiar voice said.

“Go ahead,” Kara responded.

“I’m sending you my coordinates. My owner needs to speak to someone. Can you come down?”

“Excuse me?” Kara asked, confused, “Did you say ‘owner’?”

“Yes,” Diana answered, “I don’t want to keep him waiting. Are you available?”

Something was up, and Diana was family, and it was an excuse to get out from behind the console. She sent a quick message to her cousin, then responded to Wonder Woman.

“I’ll be right down. Don’t worry, I’ll figure this out for you.”
