Chapter 5 by CharlestheCrungo

Her sleep is peaceful for once.

She awakens later somewhat rested.

For once Julie's dreams are not filled with nightmares, in face she does not even dream at all. After a several hours she awoke, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and groaning softly. She checked the time on her smartphone, it was about 11:42am, still plenty of daylight left. She grumbles some more, but gets up and makes herself a light breakfast. Eating was quick, and with nothing else to do she peeked out the windows. Down below, she could see a pack of Chitter Bugs crawling around in search of food or perhaps a victim. Thankfully they did not come near her building, and soon went farther down the street in their search, causing Julie to breathe a sigh of relief.

Going back to the bed she pulled out her smartphone. Thankfully she had some books on her phone saved, which she read to occupy herself till nightfall. She had trouble staying focused, several times having to re-read the same lines over as her mind drifted. After awhile she just put her phone to the side and laid back, her eyes closed. The pressure from her time on the run was building and she didn't know how much she could take. Worse of all was that she had not spoken with another person for so long, loneliness was taking it's toll on her psyche. Julie felt like there was no hope anymore, despite the possibility of the military setting up a safe zone for evacuation. A part of her felt like she should just stay here, this safe house wasn't really great, but it had worked well for the past week. She could probably stay holed up in here for another month at least, as long as no Pseudosects found her here. But Julie knew that would just be a slow suicide, if the hunger didn't take her the Pseudosects eventually would.

She jumped up off her bed and went to get herself something to eat. After she finished with the bland meal, Julie once more sat down to try and read, still having lots of time to wait, when she suddenly hears gunshots outside. Jumping in shock, she went to the window and peeked out. On the street, a group of soldiers were fighting against a swarm of Brood Flies. One was being attacked by several, one of them was latched onto her head, thrusting an ovipositor into her mouth, while others were clawing at her uniform. The other four were too preoccupied defending against the other Flies coming at them, but one of the soldiers was desperately trying to save their comrade. The Brood Flies seemed to change tactics, focusing on securing their one captive. more of them grabbed onto her and flew away with her. Any stragglers were shot down, and Julie watched the soldiers get into an argument, one of them wanted to go after the flies and save their comrade, but their leader talked her down, saying they had to focus on their mission. The leader , a tall muscled woman, looked around, saying they should find a safe location, as more Pseudosects could arrive.

Julie wondered.... Should she call out to them or stay hidden? She bit her lip, not sure what to do...

Does she call out to the soldiers?
