AR - Call Michelle

You are lucky that Michelle quickly agrees to help you. You never thought you would be important enough to have an agent, but that’s where your luck runs out.

It’s not until Monday that Michelle gets back to you with answers. It took more than a day for her to find out what the deal was with Adella, and in the meantime, you had no contact with her of any kind. You are a mess, and it shows. Your team and Tiff can tell. It’s not that you want to let drama get between you and your responsibilities, but you don’t even know if Adella is OK. Blue Team has a new captain. Nobody knows anything.

Between practice sets in the sun, you check your phone and find a missed call from Michelle. You excuse yourself and jog into the woods to call Michelle back.

“Oh boy, Riley,” she says when she picks up.

“What? What is it?”

“I don’t know how to say this. She’s in jail, Riley.”

You gasp. “She’s what?”

“She’s in jail. Back in Spain.”

“Holy… what? What?”

“OK, look. Riley, here’s what happened. She’s been extradited.”

“For what? What did she do?” You’re about to meltdown.

“Well, the charge is public lewdness.”

You balk. “What?”

“I’m sorry, Riley. I know that’s not what you want to hear. I’ve sent some information to your email, but do you just want me to tell you?”

“Tell me!”

“Well, looks like at a big party about a year ago she… hooked up with a girl.”

You laugh, a little hysterically. “Of course,” you say. Like… Adella has obviously always been popular. You have never doubted that.

“Well, Riley, she did it on the balcony of this club. She must’ve been drunk. But a lot of people got it on phone video, and it’s pretty explicit.”

Well… that’s not great news, but it’s classic Adella. There are no surprises here, and it was long before she was dating you. You take a deep breath.

“If it happened a year ago, why is this a big deal now? Is that even a serious crime?”

“I don’t think so,” Michelle replies. “But I don’t know about criminal law, especially in Spain. But I did find a lawyer in Spain who can put you in touch with her. You can’t just call her in jail, but I think this way you can talk to her. If that’s what you want.”

“Of course I do!” you say.

Her dad must be behind this. Is this because you turned him down?

“Oh my god, I ruined her life,” you wail.

“Um… I don’t think you had anything to do with this, Riley. It happened a year ago.”

“Text me that number!”
