New Reign

Edian population was declining, so the powers that be significantly reduced or eliminated some of the harsher penalties for stuff like **** and, in some places, polygamy. Polygamy has always been legal here in the city of Earth, so, I barely paid attention to that. Although the news outlets failed to cover it, the government also decided to bring back some more...ancient forms of mate claiming including scent marking and mild forms of slavery were also legalized. (The population was in a VERY steep decline.) There were all sorts of new legal standards and even more laws in place for when the restrictions were re-added.

My alarm woke me up the morning those laws were enacted. That was followed shortly by Rose wearing a typical blue jeans and a white shirt ensemble. I didn't have time to protest before she was out of the room again. I tried for a few moments to take off the collar but found I couldn't bring my hands to it. It was an Obedience Collar. A common, but normally illegal cursed item. It made sense there'd be a massive upturn in their sale now. The supply was there, though. Because of their illegal nature but Eden being a high-magic world, we typically sold things like that to other worlds that were less..."strict" about slavery.

They weren't always fully illegal. Used to be allowed in certain scenarios like for escorts. With those the spells were usually time-limited, which usually meant reapplying the spell every use, which usually meant having to hire someone who could cast it. Which wasn't cheap and so brothel owners got lazy and started buying shotty, unregulated ones and that led to..."unfavorable circumstances" and so they were outright banned.

My major in college was Magic History. And I had to do a paper on the "Modern applications of magic." That was some interesting research.
