Chapter 25 by Hellena Hellena

Ignoring the fact that you DO have other classes, you're probably not sleeping for 16 hours straight. What comes after your nap?

Screw classes. You have a demon to deal with.

You get a nice four hours of sleep, and feel like you could get a dozen more, but... You probably don't want to completely trash your sleep schedule, especially now that you have a couple of unavoidable commitments. You glance at the time, and sigh; you'd already missed one of your classes, but you still have an evening lab you could make... If you were in any kind of headspace to do your actual classwork.

Screw it. It was early in the semester, you could still get away with missing a day.

Instead, you turn towards your computer and Ms. Devlin. Just waiting for your deal to end was probably the worst course of action you could take... But that didn't leave you overflowing with options. Ms. Devlin was on her guard now, and you were still hopelessly outmatched. Whatever you were planning, you had to trust that you would be completely unable to act around her; either any setup would have to be self-managing, or cut her out of the plan entirely. After wracking your brains for a half hour, you've drawn up a list of five proposals.

First, you could brazen it out and try the camera plan again. It sounded stupid, but Ms. Devlin was prideful; she'd never expect you to be stupid enough to try it again, meaning that was probably the one thing she wouldn't be on guard against. If you ordered an actual spy camera instead of your phone, and just turned off your brain as you went in, you could probably get the footage you needed. You flushed a bit as you remembered how much you enjoyed this morning; you were pretty sure that once you were in the office, you wouldn't have much of a problem turning your brain off.

Second, you could try Ms. Devlin's idea. That sounded insane, relying on a demon's advice to try to oust her... But her logic had been sound, and it's possible her arrogance had gotten the better of her. It was dubious whether anyone would listen to a random student, but you were in the humanities department; writing persuasively was what you did. Plus, it was a "safe" option - if it didn't work, Ms. Devlin would probably praise you for taking her advice instead of eviscerating you.

Third, you could try to rally the students against her. The Dean was worried about pro-demon protestors, and you understood why; they were well-funded, and currently the cause was pretty popular. But if the Dean had a problem with protestors at home, that would probably matter more to her than abstract protestors in the future - especially since she already wanted Ms. Devlin out. This approach would also play to your strengths, but came with a crucial problem - you didn't know how far Ms. Devlin's influence already extended, and you knew that a lot of students who disliked Ms. Devlin did so for very different reasons. If someone struck at those fracture points, you could easily find yourself outnumbered and Ms. Devlin would know everyone who was willing to act against her.

Fourth... You didn't even like thinking about this, but you could try to... You know. Kill her. Most fanatic groups seemed pretty ugly from what you seemed, but they still put out a lot of information online; it shouldn't be that hard to work out her weaknesses, and go in there with, like, a holy water and cross or something. Or more likely a bomb or sniper rifle, from the news reports. Hopefully a pistol would do - that you could actually buy, you're pretty sure. The downside of this, of course, is that you'd probably end up on a watch list even looking this up, and you'd definitely end up with the police visiting you if you succeeded.

And lastly... You could just. Give up. You'd never thought of yourself as a fighter, and this was an enemy who was literally beyond human. You had her word that Taylor would be protected, and you didn't hate what she'd had you do so far. So why jeopardize what you had gotten from her? She thought of you as a toy now, but if you provoked her... It could get so much worse.

You also consider calling Taylor or Wyatt, or even both, to help you decide, but... Letting them know that you didn't have things in hand seemed risky. Wyatt thought that things were solved already, so there's only so much you could tell him - and Taylor, if your conversation petered out, would likely take things into her own hands. Could either of them offer a different enough perspective to outweigh the issues?

A woman with a plan, I see. So which is it?
