Chapter 44 by laverinthe

No blood type?

Day two

‘Checked on the blood cultures today. We had them stored overnight and when we came back, we found that it had turned black. Initially, we thought that it was improperly stored or contaminated. We inspected it under a microscope and saw that the cells underwent some sort of mutation. I thought someone had swapped the blood out for something else, but the technician assured me that it wasn’t tampered with. I had another sample taken from the patient and found similar cells, but in very small quantities. At first, the “tainted” cells appeared to be inert but within the hour they started replicating exponentially and the healthy cells were all but consumed. Whatever this thing is, it only seems to react when it has left the body and is exposed to the elements. I introduced it to other samples from separate donors but they were left unharmed. The patient came in with a girl. We had her checked out as well, she was clean. Whatever this is, it seems to be targeting the patient specifically. It doesn’t seem to be transmittable by any means. Regardless, I may have to initiate quarantine procedures.

We put the patient on dialysis to try and remove it, but as soon as his blood started circulating through the machine, the damn thing broke. We brought in another one and as soon as the blood started circulating, it malfunctioned. I dismissed it as coincidence, but my skepticism was put the test when the third one broke down. It’s as if they knew what we were trying to do and lashed out. I scheduled a PCR test to see what was happening to his DNA. Maybe this is some sort of genetic defect. We lack the facilities to do it, so we had to outsource it. It’ll probably take a month for it to pass through all of the bureaucratic red tape. In the meantime, we’ll keep the patient under observation.’

What's happening to you?
