Chapter 4 by Thalarynth Thalarynth

What does Tally do with his first recruit?

Help gather what the looters left behind

After properly introducing himself, Tally’s first instinct was to downplay everything and just let Mi assume her new place at his side. But she wasn’t having any of it: Mi was smart enough to realize that something strange had happened to her mind to make her this way, and she wouldn’t leave Tally alone until he explained what he'd done to her.

“But what exactly is it that’s happened to me?” Mi pestered, while Tally sifted through the bags of loot she had scored for him. “You must have put me under some sort of spell, right? That’s the only thing I can think of that could make me feel this way. Am I right?”

“I don’t really know,” Tally finally admitted, “it’s something Brim does.”

“Who’s Brim?”

“Brim’s a ghost that only I can see,” Tally said. “She says hello.”

“Right…” Mi said skeptically. She looked a little concerned, perhaps wondering if she’d fallen under the spell of a crazy person.

“Trust me, she’s here,” said Tally. Brim was, at this moment, flying loop-the-loops around Mi’s head calling her crass names, but he decided Mi didn’t need to know that. “It’s a long story, but basically, I just have this ghost tied to my body, who can brainwash other people for me.”

“Interesting,” said Mi. “So this ghost friend of yours, then… how long do we have before her control over me wears off? Do you need to get away from me before I turn back?”

That’s a good point, Tally worried, and looked to Brim for answers. She stopped spinning and smiled smugly. “No worries! It’s permanent,” she said, sticking her thumb out at Mi.

“She says it’s permanent,” repeated Tally.

“Oh, that’s a relief,” said Mi. “Here, then, let me help you with these sacks.”

As Mi knelt down next to Tally, and got to work sifting through the goodies, he couldn’t help but keep sealing glances at her. To think that she was now his forever… it was very hard to concentrate on the task at hand. Brim didn’t help matters, with her incredibly suggestive miming, either.

When the useful items had all been sorted out- food, money, etc- into one bag that Tally could carry, it was time to consider moving on from this decrepit house. He had places to be, after all! The question came down to what he would do with his new companion.

“Where are you trying to go?” Mi asked him. While he was telling her about his trying to cross to the other side of enemy territory, Tally had the idea that Mi could put up some kind of prisoner/escort front to smuggle him to safety. Strangely, Mi seemed quite resistant to this idea, trying to come up with any reason she could to avoid the prisoner/escort plan. She even suggested a full frontal attack, to take over the minds of all her fellows and subordinates.

“Why are you being so cagey about my idea?” Tally asked, exasperated. “I thought you were supposed to do everything I say!”

“It’s not that, I just… um…” Mi stammered, looking pretty embarrassed. “Well, I don’t think you’d like it. It would just be wrong. I mean, you’re my Master now, I couldn’t just…”

“It will be pretend, Mi,” Tally told her patiently. “I’m not asking you to actually take me prisoner.”

“Okay, fine,” said Mi, “here is the reason I’m so cagey about your idea:” She rummaged around in a pouch she had on her belt, and produced… a leash. With a collar.

“That’s…” Tally began.

“Yep.”

“That’s how you lot carry your prisoners, is it?”

“That’s right.”

“Is that actively trying to be humiliating?”

“Well… kind of, yes. I told you you wouldn’t like it.”

“Do it,” said Brim, “I’d love to see you wearing that.”

Tally stared at the leash, and Mi’s apologetic expression. Just how low was he willing to stoop for this sneaky little plan?

Does Tally let Mi Iau take him through the village on a leash, in broad daylight? Does he take her suggestion, of trying to take over the rest of her comrades?

What's the plan?
