Chapter 48
by
Manbear
Does any of this make sense?
Cassiopia explains
“It can't be!” Cassiopeia's gasp reminds you that there are others all around you watching this drama unfold.
“I pray I'm wrong, child, but what else could she be speaking of?” Tired of not knowing what was going on you pull the pretty blonde novice to your side and lead her away from the alter.
“What the fuck is she talking about?” You ask. It is unfair to yell at the girl, but what should have been the biggest score of your life is turning more complicated than you could ever foresee.
“This city is old, Adonis.” Cassiopeia explains once you had moved into one of the small shrines to the side of the main sanctuary. “Much older than you can imagine; older even than the gods themselves.” Her voice takes on a slightly different tone, as she recites from memory from her training. “I was taught that the first human inhabitants worshipped the Titans and served the old ones as slaves until the children of Zeus, Athena, Apollo and the other new gods first walked the land. Athena and her forces fought the dark ones for possession of this city.” Perhaps sensing your irritation, Cassiopeia speeds up her narrative.
"Once the Titans were defeated, the Blessed Athena gave this city to us, her children, dedicated to her holy name." Cassia's expressive eyes search yours for any sign of understanding, and then darken noticeably. "With the Titans gone, their demon servants were driven underground. The creatures hid in the undercity away from the Goddess' sight and the light of Apollo's sun arrows; they would sneak out only at night and raid the human city above, stealing away the sons and daughters of the inhabitants to use as sex toys and breeding livestock.” Cassiopeia seems to finally be getting to what you need to know.
“In order to protect her children, Athena created great magics to seal the catacombs - locking all who were inside forever into darkness. It is known that the demons wait below in their deathless state; wanting nothing more than to one day reclaim their lost city.” Slowly the situation is becoming clear, both the High Priestess' belief that she would be saved and her blonde subordinate's terror at what might be happening.
“What do you think?” The idea of taking council from a teenager who knows nothing about the world seems absurd, but you are in way beyond what you are comfortable with.
“The...” she pauses searching for a word, “High Priestess is mad...” she pauses again, and you sense her unease talking about the Priestess like this. “There is something hidden and is now revealed. I think I am beginning to understand the Holy Mother's obsession with our purity.” The pretty girl blushes as she recalls how you've spent the past days but continues on determined to give you the information you need. “It is said that the demons' strength depended upon the number of men, woman or animal whose body was defiled by theirs.” Her shy voice drops to a whisper “Especially virgins.”
That at least, fits well with what you saw in the High Priestess' madness, but even so this is the stuff of fairytales. You turn to see your men watching you with undisguised interest, some still with freshly bloodied women at their feet. What would your men think of you if you halted their victory celebration to look into this religious hokum?
Do you listen to Edlynn and Cassiopia?
