Chapter 14 by A.Dent A.Dent

Not questioning the die now, are you?

I'll have what she's having

Without saying a word, Jenny went and sat back down at the table. For a couple minutes she silently stared at the faux-wood grain, to the point that Siobhan and I were beginning to feel awkward. I was about to say something when she spoke up. "Do you think Max...Maxine? Do you think their roll backfired because they rolled low, or because they rolled as low as possible?"

"Well...we're not sure." That was all I could offer.

"In games like Dungeons and Dragons there are a lot of rolls where something that the characters are trying to do either happens or doesn't, provided that the player rolls high enough." Siobhan added. "In others, the 'degree' to which it happens is relative to the roll. The higher it happens. But rolling a 1 or a 20, are called critical fails or successes. Depending on house rules, they could mean spectacular outcomes, in either directions. We're not sure of all the rules. Hell, for all we know, Max mad things worse for themselves when they tried to take off with the Eye."

"Probably didn't help that they were being a massive dick about it too." Jenny wryly chuckled. "Certainly didn't help their karma. Okay, I think I know what I'm going to do. I know it backfired just now, right in front of me, but I liked Max's idea. I've always been a little jealous of the girls in my grade. I know I'm cute," the teen sighed, "and I know it's more than a little shallow, but I've always wanted to be hot. I want to start college as one of the girls everyone notices."

"Are you sure?" Siobhan asked?

"You saw what happened to Max. There's a lot of room for that to be interpreted in a way that doesn't work out for you. I think I get the idea of what you're aiming for, but people would notice a girl with a third arm growing out of her forehead."

"That...that's not something I'd considered." Jenny appeared to deflate in front of us. "You guys haven't held anything back have you?"

We both shook our heads no. "Because of the bet, we couldn't have. Just like you would have been wearing Max's boxer shorts had we won."

"Okay. I'm going to take the chance." I reached out to hand the die to her. "But I want you to roll for me. Part of Max's problem could be that they were thinking about what they thought was hot, not what they wanted to look like. I'm not saying I want to look exactly like Siobhan here, but if I did, I would be be thrilled."

"You sure?" At Jenny's nod, I let the die fly. "Here. We. Go."

More of the same?
