Chapter 36

Did he?
I was unable to discern so.
For my attention was fixed solely upon the gloved hand over my mouth, and the blade at my throat. "A sound. A flinch. And it will be the last one you make," my assailant snarled, his voice sounding tired yet wild. Like a weary warrior trying to avoid a confrontation. I made the mistake of swallowing, and felt a few hairs separate themselves from my head. The figure behind me shifted and looked over my shoulder. "Haa... Enjoying the sights, Voyeur?" I narrowed my eyes at him and let out a short growl. He scoffed at me. "Come along then. Let's leave these two lovebirds alone, and go somewhere where we won't be bothered."
The tiniest bit of pressure of his knife assured him my obedience.
He pulled me deeper within the forest, twisting, and turning, and winding through it, leading me around in circles, until I was certain that I would never find my wait out, before coming upon a fairly clear place. "Now," he said, dropping his knife hand to my stomach, "I'm going to let go of your mouth. If you scream or struggle, I will gut you, and leave you here for the bears. Nod if you understand."
I nodded.
He released his fingers slowly, keeping the palm of his hand firmly against my cheek as his digits pulled away from my lips. After pausing for a moment, as if waiting for me to give him a reason to end my life, he finally spoke again. "So you are intelligent. Well then, Peeping Tom, what business do you have here?"
"My name is Devon McKay. And I am here on invitation by the Madosin Headman, Mr. Morris Gottlieb," I hissed, trying to see his face with no success.
"Hm... and on what grounds is this invitation?" he grunted.
"He wishes for me to observe and document how the people here live, in the hopes that the rest of the world see this place as a home of openness and freedom, instead of depravity and having poor manners." A low growl rumbled from behind me, and the fingers at my cheek flexed. Suddenly, I was pushed forwards. Catching myself before I fell, I turned to identify my assailant, who was putting away his blade.
Who was it?

Madosin.
A voyeur's tale.
The journals of Devon Mckay, the only outsider to ever enter and leave the commune of Madosin, have been found. And what stories they hold. Cover image credited to https://pixabay.com/photos/still-life-candle-book-vintage-5347677/
