Chapter 3 by ffq ffq

Who?

Imogen Heap

John expected low hanging fruit for his first client. Established celebrities needed a track record before coming in, and the real **** ones would build up those credentials for him. His first client fit the bill perfectly.

Imogen Heap, and obscure woman in the music business, sat across from John with her legs crossed and hands on her knee. The microphone was required - who knew what morsels he could get for future ads.

"What brings you in?" John asked.

Imogen sighed wearily and began. "As you know, I spent many years trying to establish myself. I even tried wearing bizarre fashion to stand out from other artists. I thought my efforts over a decade would pay off when I allowed a sample of my music to be used for Jason Derulo's 'Whatcha Say'."

"Did it?"

She shook her head. "He didn't credit me. As he rose in the charts, won more awards and became more famous, everyone started to think I was a backup singer and those words came from him. I can't even perform my own concerts anymore without people asking me to play his song or where he is."

"I see, I see," John scanned through some articles on his tablet. "It says here that Mr. Derulo was eager to perform a duet with you at the Grammys. Did you consider his offer?"

She gasped. "Of course not! You should have seen the plans for this duet. The entire show would have been him in the spotlight with me twerking and grinding against him, singing my part in a higher pitch to make him look good."

John scribbled notes. Finally, he came to an answer... but not one she would like. "Ms. Heap, as you know, I'm in the business of resurrecting fading careers... but you need to have a career to start with."

"What!?"

"You've been chasing after making a name for yourself, when it's plain as day what you're really good for is being exploited to boost real talent."

"How da-"

"Shh. Here's what we'll do. You will call up Jason Derulo and beg him for a chance to do the duet he offered. Tell him you were blown away by how much better you sound on Whatcha Say than your own songs, and it really opened your eyes to your true calling as a backup singer and dancer for real stars like him. I'm sure he'd love to help get your new career off on the right foot."

Imogen stewed but could do nothing, just listen as the commands sank into her mind.
