Chapter 15 by anxietycatalyst anxietycatalyst

What's at the top of the building?

Nothing...at first

Despite their best efforts, each step the streaking duo took up the ladder let out a soft metallic clang. Blake desperately hoped the sound wouldn't carry to the front of the building. Or be loud enough to wake any students in the dorms they were climbing past. The only thing worse than that man out front seeing the two of them naked would be entire teams of students looking out their windows to see this.

Blake reached the top of the ladder and peeked her head over the side. To her relief, there wasn't anyone on the roof. To her even bigger relief, there was a door leading down into the building.

Blake climbed up the rest of the ladder and stepped over the ledge onto the roof. Weiss joined her moments later, taking a moment to look around in wonder.

"Wow..." she said, turning in a circle. "Why didn't we come up here? You can see everything!"

Turning to follow her gaze, Blake saw that she was right. She could see all the way to downtown Vale, the lights only twinkling dots in the distance, little more than the stars above their heads.

"Did you have anything like this, back home?" Weiss asked, turning to look at Blake.

Blake shook her head. "No. Menagerie isn't exactly known for its large, sprawling industrial centers. That's not to say we had no cities like this. They just weren't that common."

"I see," Weiss nodded.

"On the bright side, we did have a much better view of the stars then you see here."

"Oh, I can only imagine," Weiss sighed, looking back out at the view. "In Atlas, everything is even more industrialized than it is here. This is probably the best view of stars I've ever gotten, for myself."

Blake just smiled at Weiss's wonder, letting the moment play out for a couple more minutes. Then she nudged Weiss's shoulder with her own.

"Come on," Blake said. "We should go back inside. We do still have class tomorrow."

"Oh, gods, you're right!" Weiss responded, and the two of them began walking towards the door leading to the building.

When they were about 10 feet away from the door, though, Blake's ears twitched. Again, she grabbed Weiss's arm and stopped her.

"What's wrong?" Weiss asked, looking confused.

"Someone's coming!" Blake whispered, grabbing Weiss's wrist and pulling her off to the side of the door, hopefully out of sight of whoever came through that door. But they were in an even worse situation than they were down in front of the dorms. There weren't many walls or corners to hide behind. They just had to hide in what little shadows there were and hope for the best.

Who comes through the door?
