Calling Marianne

A couple of minutes later, Mackenzie was on her phone, anxiously waiting for Marianne to pick up. "Hey Kenz, what's up?". Marianne's tone was playful and a little sarcastic, and Mackenzie struggled with her words. "Uhh, yeah ... hey..." She stammered for a few moments, before bursting out, furiously. "What do you want, Kenz? I thought you learned your lesson already." Marianne's voice was uneasy, but she did her best to channel her fear of confrontation into a severe tone. It was enough to break Mackenzie's short-lived mutiny and turn her voice to pleading. "Please, Marianne... I'm sorry .... I'm not even mad at you for yesterday ..." Marianne swallowed silently. "You are?" She spoke in a cautious voice, trying to sound as indifferent and stern as she could. Her heart raced at the thought of Mackenzie's helplessness, and for a brief moment Marianne harbored conflicting feelings: both wanting to take advantage of it and feeling strangely envious of it, at the same time.
